I consider it a privilege to be given an opportunity to read another book from a master story- teller, William H. Coles. In this interesting novel- The Spirit of Want, Mr Coles tells the story of a lawyer called Lucy MacMiel whose father was a very influential eye surgeon and her husband’s boss. Unfortunately, she was engulfed by her quest to be at the top of the legal profession in her country, as well as her lust for a renowned preacher who had paid her to defend him in court against the allegation of sexual assault of a teenage girl. Hence, she neglected her family and migrated to another continent to be with Hower Bian, the preacher. This was her doom and led to her untimely death as a result of food poisoning from the mother of one of Hower’s numerous concubines.

I like the pictorial illustrations preceding each chapter. I feel that they describe every chapter well, especially the one for Africa. My best character was Elizabeth, Lucy’s half- sister. She had a very kind heart, but I was a little surprised that she went to lie with Lucy’s husband first, during Lucy’s absence and not the other way round. I also admired Lucy’s husband Luke, for his honesty and courage, despite the intimidation and threats from his father-in-law who wanted him to help him cover a mistake he made during surgery which caused the patient to go blind.

I didn’t dislike anything about the book. However, I think that God is not just a myth that exists in the minds of humans as Hower claimed. I believe that God is real and is so much more than that. Lucy’s death also made me sad, because she died before she could correct her mistakes and live a better life.

I would rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. It was written in good English and was professionally edited. I found only two typographical errors while reading it. The author created settings that would help every reader visualize the story and feel connected to the plot.

The book does not contain any profane language or erotic scenes. Hence, I would recommend it for everyone who loves to read a good story. People in the legal profession and medical practitioners would learn a thing or two from it. The author also gave clarity to some principles behind the healing miracles that are being performed by many preachers. This information is important to avoid deception.
