The Neighbour At Number 18 (Reload), a book, written by Hawa Crickmore centered on the lives of the famiies of Brenda and Maureen who lived on the same street. Brenda’s daughter was called Maria and Maureen’s was Emilia. The girls attended the same school. Unfortunately, Emilia was a bad influence on Maria and introduced her and other young girls to her cousin, Tyler Staples who introduced Maria to romance at thirteen. Tyler was stopped by the police; but not before Maria got attracted to him. This lust for Tyler became her little secret for many years, until she became ill with vascular dementia and revealed it by her words.

I learnt many things about the symptoms and treatment of vascular dementia from the book. My best character in the book was Emilia’s teacher who cared so much about her pupils’ welfare beyond academics that she knew when some of the girls in her class began to behave strangely. This made her to inform the school authority who put measures in place to monitor the girls’ movement after school to find out what was responsible for the distraction at school. The ‘ Say No to School Sex Recruits’ campaign group which was established by the parents of St Michael high school is another concept that I liked very much and think is worthy of emulation by the parents of teenagers.

I did not like the way some characters’ names were misplaced sometimes in error by the writer. This caused some confusion for me while reading and made me have to read the previous paragraphs again, in such cases, to clear my doubts.

I would rate the book 2 out of 4 stars. This is because the book was not edited properly. There were a lot of errors, especially in the use of tenses in sentences. Nevertheless, it was worth reading to me.

The author captured my interest from the beginning of her book and kept it until the end. She wove many tales from the lives of the major characters and I give her credit for her creativity. However, her thoughts were poorly expressed on paper. Hence, I do not think that the book should be read by children because some expressions may be bad for their grammar. The theme is a very important factor that has ruined many marriages and is very important for adults to read about before getting married, but not children.
