The Surgeon’s wife, a book, written by William H. Coles, tells an interesting story of love, betrayal and revenge. In it, Clayton Otherson’s young wife falls in love with his colleague Mike Boudreaux. The love story is entwined with some office politics and power tussle which required that Clayton be stopped from performing surgeries, especially on patients with morbid obesity without a laparoscope, against his wish. Mike, as the head of the department was caught between two sides. He did his best to protect Clayton’s interest and career in loyalty to him for being his professor and mentor in training. However, it soon became very clear that it was risky to allow Clayton to continue working, due to the costly mistakes which he made sometimes. Hence, he was banned from performing surgeries in the country. Unfortunately, he blamed Mike for not doing enough to save his neck and planned revenge on him for it, as well as for taking his wife, Catherine.
I liked the character, Mike Boudreaux very much and learnt some things from his leadership style. He was not one to be swayed by people’s emotions and always did what he felt was right on every occasion. I didn’t dislike anything about the book. However, the image of the man on the book cover, staring at nothing in particular was amusing to me, and I just felt that the cover didn’t depict the theme so well to me.
I would rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. This is because it was edited properly and I did not find any error in it. It is also a very interesting book and I could also relate easily with most of the characters.
The book can be read by adults and mature minds. Various lessons may be learnt from it. One is an awareness of the fact that many other people may bear the consequences of one careless action which may be taken for granted. Others are the benefits of having the right amount of self confidence, and the negative effects of arrogance. The book is not good for children and may be disliked a little, by non- medical professionals because of the use of medical terms like laparoscope in it.
Mr William Coles, the author, was able to put the right amount of suspense into the plot at various points. I appreciate the fact that the climax did not drag on too much until it became boring. He expressed his thoughts very clearly. I think he deserves an award for his ability to write short and captivating stories.
