Mike has been the chief of surgery for four years now in New Orleans. As such he has the hard choice of making decisions that are in the best interest of his hospital, even at the cost of his long-time friend and mentor Clayton. He also has to struggle with maintaining his extremely time consuming job and his personnel life. He is very professional and compassionate about his career but that often gets in the way of his love and family life.
When Clayton starts becoming a threat to the patients, Mike has to either try saving him or take part in ending his mentor's medical career. The Surgeons Wife by William H. Coles tells the story of Mike trying the best he can to save his friend's career, but while doing so, he ends up growing closer with Clayton's wife and daughter. He does not want anything to do with destroying Clayton's career or marriage, but at some point Clayton has to help himself. Can he succesfully reach out and save the man who made him who he is today? Or will he help be the downfall of one of the country's most renowned surgeons?
I do not often read books outside of the romance genre, but this is one example of a time I am glad I did. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because I loved it. I only found two potential errors, potential because I was not quiet sure if they were intentional or not, but marked them down just in case. It will be added to my list of books I would read again and I could recommend this book to anyone. It has drama, mystery, and I could not put it down until I finished it. This book should be way more renowned then it is.
I do not think I could pick a specific audience for this book as it covers a little bit of every genre. It is very well written and easy to read, I did not have any trouble understanding anything. I enjoyed that it also occasionally switches the point of view to another character because it helped bring the whole world together. I almost feel like these characters are people I know, not just part of a story. Even the few parts I did not like, I still actually liked, because they were what made it so exciting even if it did not go the way I wanted. I love a good suprise in a book and find it rare to be suprised anymore after reading so many.
It had only a little profanity and no erotic scenes so I could see this book suitable for mature teens/young adults even. Depending on how strict the parent is at least. I just found it overall an entertaining and interesting read. My day passed by in a breeze and the boredom from sitting at home was chased away even as soon as the second page. I enjoyed all the characters and the details made me see everything as clear as if it were a movie inside my head. I will be looking for more books by William H. Coles from now on.
