I have watched several movies where I saw people in a boat fishing. I never really understood this beautiful art until I read this beautiful compilation by Michelle Cummings. The Reel Sisters by Michelle Cummings is a story centred around the lives of five women (Amanda, Sophie, Rose, Veronica, and Melody). The story is narrated by these five characters, and you can't help but fall in love (like I did) with this book. Sophie, Amanda, Rose, Veronica, and finally Melody's paths cross by fate. Sophie's love for fly fishing is transferred continously to the 5 of them as as they happen to meet each other at spectacular moments in their lives. The artistic and invigorating art of fishing would bring these women to certain life transforming moments in each of their lives. Can this bond of friendship and common interest overcome their various challenges and help them move up to higher goals in their personal lives? Find out as you read this life transforming story of friendship, passion, love, courage, determinaton, and togetherness.
When I started reading this book, I didn't think it was interesting. This was because of its gradual build-up from the start. As I delved deeper, I fell in love with this story and could hardly drop it. What I liked most in the story was the way these 5 women applied/related this art of fly fishing to their everyday lives. Melody was a character that exhibited this the most. My reason for liking this the most is because of my strong beliefs. I believe that everything on earth is an art that helps one discover their true self. This happens when we allow ourselves to look beyond the literal part of the activity we're engaged in.
On a scale of 1 to 4, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I gave it a 4 because it looked like it was professionally edited. Having read so many book, this is my first time of coming across an exceptionally flawless one like this one. The central theme of passion and friendship also influenced my decision. I did not give it a 3 because of its flawless editing and it's exceptional narrative/informative style as regards fly fishing.
The characters in the book were real enough to enable the reader identify with their various lifestyles and attributes. This made the book a realistic read. The plot was quite emotional. This also made the book an endearing read. The book also had its moments. There were times it was all fun, and there were times it was all hilarious. A times, it made me sit at the edge of my seat anticipating the next page. It also had more than one plot, but they were all combined to give a balanced story of love, friendship, and courage.
If there was anything I disliked most in the book, it would be some of the undefined fly fishing terms (reel, cast, fly, leader etc.). My reason is that those of us (like me) who know little or absolutely nothing about fly fishing would find it hard to picture the story and might need a dictionary to help them out. It would have been better if the author had defined some of the fly fishing terms at the start of the book. All the same I learnt a lot from the book.
This read would appeal most to all fly fishers and those who love the art. It would also appeal to women and feminists generally. Also, if you have friends who are dear to you, you would love this book. There's a lot in this book for you. On the other hand, if you don't love fly fishing, or are not interested in learning about it, I do not recommend this book for you.You would like it the least. Also, if you don't like feminists, you may also not want to read this book. If you don't appreciate inter-family bonds and friendships then this read is also not for you.
On a final note, I hope to discover myself through fly fishing one day just like Melody did.
