Oh, wow. This book by William H. Cole was confusing, but I could just not stop reading it! This story was about a woman who is kind-of a disaster, but I do believe, she was trying her best the whole time.

Lucy was adopted into a wealthy family and was a very intelligent lawyer, but she seemed to spiral down, and take a lot of loved ones with her. She married and gave birth, but could not commit to any of the multiple people that continually tried to love her. It was hard for me to stop reading because I wanted her to be okay; I wanted some good to come to her, as well as, the rest of her family. Her character in The Spirit of Want sucked me in, and I wanted love to come through, but it was tough.

Lucy and many of the other characters were given great development in this book. The author did an excellent job at building up the lives of the families in this story. I wish the transitions between chapters were a little smoother. I mentioned earlier that this book was confusing, and it was difficult to keep track of time in the book. At the beginning of each chapter the author told us which character we were checking in with and occasionally included the year, but I wish it told us which year it was, every time. The book seemed to jump around a lot and seemed very choppy, at times.

For the first half of the book, I kept telling myself, “Hm, I don’t know if I can get into this book”, but I have to admit, this story was an interesting one. The Spirit of Want could have had a smoother timeline, and maybe, been less erratic, but then again, maybe that was the point. It is possible that the choppy style fit more with the characters lives. I read this book very quickly, so for that I think it is worth 3 out of 4 stars. The intrigue of Lucy kept me hooked and bumped the score up, regardless of the style and organization from the author.

I think it is important for anyone considering this book to know that it is not a gooey mushy love story. There is love because love is a part of life, but there is a lot of difficult things that can hinder love. There are so many different kinds of love. This book includes a lot of difficult relationships with complex feelings, and sometimes things don’t work out.
