Cynthia and Dan by Dorothy May Mercer is a fantastic read. This book places you into the covert life of a woman named Cynthia. Cynthia has a mystery man drop into her life. She is thrust into a decision between her consistent cop boyfriend and the new romantic heartthrob. All the while, she must balance her personal life with her intriguing daytime job and her after hour top-secret position with her brother. The book is a fast read and charming. Mercer does a great job of holding the reader's interest to see Cynthia’s choices at the end of the book.

I would rate Mercer’s book a 3 out of 4 stars. I enjoyed her ploy of cryptic layering throughout the novel. She engaged us in Cynthia’s shoes leaving us to worry, love, and decipher situations with her. Even when Cynthia was in a hardship she didn’t say anything to anyone, even her brother. Cynthia’s life has many layers to it. The story seems to tip the iceberg of potential, not to mention Mercer cleaned up the ending quite nicely while still leaving more to be desired. The storyline was not one of my traditional reads since I usually stick to science fiction, but it was captivating nonetheless. Her story on Cyber War is entirely plausible, making the story all the more engaging. Mercer dives into the subject of Cyber War which left me thinking about my own security and how the issues presented are current and relevant.

There was very little I didn’t like about the book. However, the men in the book spoke to Cynthia with many pet names, which basically distracted me instead of constructing a belief of their love for her. Reading it this way didn’t completely engulf me in the novel, making it unconvincing as a love story. This is why I rated the story a 3 instead of a full 4 star.

I would definitely recommend this book. Cynthia is a well-rounded character that many people would like. It wasn’t overly romantic making the book open for many different readers. This mystery novel kept me intrigued and connected. I would not recommend this novel for young readers because there is a small section of an illicit nature. Overall, I did enjoy the characters established, the scenes Mercer chose, and the general storyline she developed. There are other books in this series that I would like to read and see how they compare.
