The Spirit of Want. by William H Coles title is cleverly reflective of the story and characters where each is struggling with their inner spirit of desires and wants in their lives.

A pleasure to read, I love Coles writing style of using “And” in the beginning of a sentence. Kingsley Amis The King's English published in 1997 says, “And can give unimprovably early warning of the sort of thing that is to follow.” Coles wrote: “Of course I didn’t. And I don’t like your asking.” And she didn’t bring it up again.

Professor Jack Lynch, Associate Professor of English at Rutgers University in New Jersey says, "And" can “often make a sentence more forceful and graceful. One example in the story: “I meant me,” he said. “Not you.” And he moved by the high chair to take Lucy in his arms.

To use "And" is a “useful way of indicating that what you are about to say will reinforce what you have just said,” says Sir Ernest Gowers, The Complete Plain Words 1954. Another example from the novel, “And you’ve always been jealous.”

A page turner, The Spirit of Want will stir your spirit. Told with compassion and deep understanding, William H Coles, unique power writing style leads you to a surprising ending of the aching reality that relationships can become. “And she wanted him to need her. He cared for her, wanted her—she believed that—more than any woman, she was sure. But he couldn’t really love her the way she craved. And they would never be equal in love. He was too involved with his image—an image mixed with divinity healing and the promise of eternal life. So why keep trying? Well. She couldn’t do without him. That was all she could think of as an explanation, such as it was.”

The Spirit of Want is an intricate web of personal and professional relationships and how their desires control their destiny and questions their loves. Good vs Evil, Right vs. Wrong, Satan and God. It is an endearing story very well written that would be an interesting read for anyone who thinks about the “Spirit”. I rate Spirit of Want by William H Coles , 4 out of 4 Stars. It is "exceptionally well edited" with no editing errors. ”What was the motivation in them that she would never understand? She just didn’t believe selflessness existed in the human spirit."
