“There is one rule, above all others, for being a man. Whatever comes, face it on your feet.” (Robert Jordan, The Hunt) It is easy to get caught up in life trying to accomplish the things that are expected of us, only to forget what our soul truly desires. This may lead a man astray and turn his life upside down. To find the strength to continue, he may need to find the thing in life that re-ignites the spark that fires his spirit.
Eytan Uliel shares the story of four men, who create an annual tradition of taking week long trips to escape the drag of their mediocre lives. Over time the men get married, excel in their careers, and start families. Everything seems to be going as expected, until life challenges throw them a curveball. The fun annual vacations become more of a life support for the men as they drown in life’s hardships. The adventures take place in various extreme destinations around the world, in which the men participate in rugged outdoor activities, such as: hiking, biking, ice climbing, and kayaking. These “Man Missions” are filled with joy, pain, and memories that would last a lifetime.
This book does an excellent job of telling a story about situations that do happen in real life, while adding in a fun twist. The feeling that one is not living their life the way their heart desires is a common occurrence in many people’s lives. I enjoyed the “believable” tone of the book; it felt like a real person was telling me these stories, not just something that someone made-up. The characters spoke just how normal guys of their nature would speak, there were no special filters used in the creation of their words. This book also depicts how easily a wrong choice can turn a person’s life around. It shows the rewards and consequences of the decisions that an individual makes.
The book was well written, however it could have had a few more twists and turns to keep the reader’s attention. A total of fifteen “Man Missions” were told in the story and I felt that there could have been more drama added to their adventures. There were slightly dramatic events on the trips, but not enough to get my heart pumping. In fact, it was hard to continue reading at the beginning of the book, it lacked the thing that gets a person hooked into the story. The end was better, there were specific events that added some drama and kept my attention to the finish. There were no big grammatical errors or misspelled words that I noticed. The book was obviously professionally edited prior to my evaluation.
I genuinely enjoyed the story depicted in Man Mission, despite the lack of dramatic events. Therefore, I will rate this book a 3 out of 4. If the author would have added in a few more attention-grabbing events to the plot, then I would have given this book another star. I would recommend this book to someone who enjoys a well-written adventure story and has the patience to read through the slower, less exciting parts. However, I would only recommend this book to a mature audience, as it does contain foul language and adult situations.
