I rate book Strong Heart 3 out of the 4 stars. The book starts with intriguing introduction and continues to unexpected plot development. The accent is put on man against nature and nature against man, journey of self-discovery through travelling and cultivating self-awareness in family roles. I didn't rate book 4 out of 4 stars because the end of the story is quite predictable and expected.
The main character Sarah, 13 years old girl with strong personality, leads the story. After her grandmother Ruth left her with Sarah's grandfather Tom she has never met before, they began the journey of their lives. The intention of the journey was to find ancient Atatal, together with Tom’s friends Myra and William. After Becky’s death, Tom’s daughter and Sarah’s mother, they didn’t get a chance to meet so that journey gave them an opportunity connect and find out more about each other. During this trip many secrets are revealed and all of travellers learn a lot about themselves and their relationship with others, heritage, history, legends and the importance of family and friendships. For them, finding an artifact can bring peace to native people and protect nature and historical places against capitalism but also it can bring peace to Bob-Bob, Sarah’s ancestor and calm down the mooning spirits. The things get complicated when young Sarah run away to the middle of nowhere as a consequence of conflict with her grandfather and Atatal is missing…
Author Charlie Sheldon is using his knowledge of biology and archeology in combination with experience in shipping activities and local tribal culture to show eternal conflict between science and creationism. Author is using facts about ice age periods and animals, impact of capitalism on local tribal people, force of nature, deep interpersonal and family relationships. He shows how life situations can bring people closer and make relationship stronger, times of difficulty bring people closer together.
Author balanced dialogue and description in writing, he used short sentences to make a point, showing the scenes and presenting quite different personalities through characters. In the book there are many interesting sayings and some inspirational quotes, deep and easy to remember. I find very interesting giving the nicknames to characters based on physical characteristics, personalities and skills instead of using their real names. It brings readers closer to characters.
This book would appeal people interested in archeological facts and local tribes legends, spiritual awakening, journeys and ceremonies. The book shows how power-hungry people are eager to use physical strength and manipulation to achieve goals and take over leadership. Desire for power can be even greater then empathy and humanity - in book Strong Heart we can find many examples.
