We all have hopes for a better future and these hopes comfort us during the hardtimes. But when it comes to reality there is a lot of disappointments our mind has to overcome. In The Ordinary Doll by Mario Keifer the lead character, Luciana, just like any of us, has a lot of hopes for a better future. But, will her hopes turn into reality or will she have to overcome the disappointments of life like many of us?
Set in the late 1950s, teenaged Luciana is one of the older daughters in her poor family. She helps her mother with the younger children and with household duties and in her mind she dreams of dancing and handsome Tomas. As life progresses, she gets married to Tomas. Just when she thought life was getting better, she discovers that her husband was involved in adultery with her best friend. Having to overcome such a huge disappointment, she decides to leave him and take charge of her own life. This time she leans towards her other childhood dream for a better life as she starts giving dance lessons.
Her life takes another turn when she starts having nightmares of the Cucuy. The Cucuy would destroy her household trying to break her down. Luciana, being as strong as she was, fought back those nightmares and woke up.
The Ordinary Doll is a modern story with a touch of Mexican folklore. The narration of the story is great as it never confuses the readers about whether a character is dreaming or it is reality. The writer uses words from Luciana’s native language and that helps in making the characters feel more realistic.
The readers are able to understand Luciana’s background very well because the writer has provided us with a lot of information about her culture, lifestyle and struggle. Luciana’s character manages to motivate the readers through her daily struggle and the way she overcomes barriers one after the other. This book is very interesting and informative. I had a great time reading this book and I'll rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
Throughout the book I didn't find any error and I believe the book has been professionally edited. The book has a lot of information about Luciana’s culture and that will attract people who loves to read about new cultures. Due to its adult contents, the book is unsuitable for children. Matured teenagers and young adults should also consider reading this book.
