Being a physician himself, Dr. Morton Tavel presents valid crucial points in this book with very relevant facts and figures. This book is obviously not just a product of passion but also of extensive research. With about three hundred pages sectioned into sixty-two chapters, Dr. Tavel summarizes the information needed by everyone who cares about his health to stay alive and healthy. There are no superfluous medical jargons, thus readers will certainly not find it hard to digest.
As an interesting way to joggle up the mind of the reader, the book exposes the menace of obesity in our society- a whooping value of seventy percent is no joke. Much of these was attributed to consumption of sugary beverages, ready availability of fast food restaurants, increasing cost of healthier foods and other societal trends. Reduction of calories by diet was affirmed to be the best way to reduce this burden, but herein lies most of the myths people have blindly followed for long.
The author stressed some other important easy-to-do advice such as: eating a healthy breakfast, consuming fruits and vegetables instead of dietary supplements all the way, consuming whole grains instead of refined grains, vigilantly regulating salt intake, taking adequate sleep and regular exercises, amongst others. Do you want to know the truth about snake oil? It is all in here! Some of the chapters of Health Tips, Myths and Tricks are blessed with a clear-cut conclusion at the end and this adds to the beauty of the book. I could not identify any significant typographical or grammatical errors.
I particularly like the fact that there is a good number of overlap between the sections for two reasons: repetition enhances understanding and it also makes the book qualify for a crash read. So, individuals who are not so much given to reading can still take a bite of choice sections and there will be no confusion whatsoever in their minds. One more beautiful thing I commend the author for is the choice of words that make up the topic. As familiar these words may seem, they convey the true essence of this book in a nutshell. Indeed, for one to stay healthy, one needs to know what to do, what not to do and how to do the needful.
Without any reservation, I join other reviewers to say that this book is worth reading and I would rate it 4 out of 4 stars. As it is for many literatures that are medicine and health based, considering the rapid turnover of discoveries in the field, I really look forward to an updated edition of this wonderful book.
