I'd like to start by saying Why didn't Johnny just quit by Kyle Oh M.D., definitely earns 4 out of 4 stars from me. Outstanding editing, great format and very helpful information. This book would be amazing for people who suffer from addiction, watch a loved one suffer from addiction, or anyone that may be curious about how addiction is, and the outlook from others. In this book, great information from a doctor who seen and worked with addicts first hand, understanding different ways it affects people and also, how sometimes doctors can cause addicts. Amazing, heartfelt stories about how addiction can take tolls on families that can definitely pull at your heart strings.
This book is very well laid out, great structure and format. I liked how the author explained every aspect of addiction and how easily it can happen. Addicts don't choose to be addicts. Addict's still have families that love them and suffer themselves watching their loved one suffer. Another great thing about this book, it shows how being a doctor can have its downsides. The author often times felt guilty, and blamed himself for patients that became addicts from prescribed medication, and witnessed the pain from not only the addicts, but the addicts family.
The author done terrific with this book. However, I thought by the title it was be an actual story about the struggles of an addict, although it does have parts of that, it is mainly focused on explaining addiction. That would be the only downfall of this book. Anything you could possibly want to know about the subject is right here. I would suggest maybe a different title, considering it's not just about 'Johnny' and more so information.
Addiction is one thing that you couldn't really understand until you become one, but once you watch someone you love become someone you don't know, you hurt more than the one addicted. However, as stated above, it's not always from poor decisions, it can in fact be an accident. This book explains so many factors of how addiction can take over any life, no matter your age, race, etc. The outlook on not only family, but from the doctor that can cause the addiction is surprising for me, not knowing how many people (even ones you hardly know) can be effected.
Over all, this book is great. It is very interesting and great for anyone looking to become a doctor that will specialize with narcotic medication, addicts/recovering addicts, and their loved ones. Often times, this could be a very touchy subject for some, but if you're needing light on how it can happen, how to cope, etc. this will be a great read for you. Not only do I love the book, but I've quickly become a fan of the author as well. Worth the read for sure.
