Dr. Morton E. Tavel, MD is the author of the book titled “Health Tips, Myths and Tricks”. He was a physician specialist in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Diseases and also a Clinical Professor at Indiana University School of Medicine. Some of his civic activities are: past president of the Local and Indiana state division of the American Heart Association, an editorial member of several National Medical Journals and he has also presented numerous local and international lectures across the world. The Don has over one hundred and twenty (120) publications in the medical profession. The Health Tips, Myths and Tricks by Morton E. Tavel, MD was published by Brighton Publishing LLC, 435N Haris Drive, Mesa AZ85203 and was printed in USA with ISBN13:971-1-62183-340-6 and ISBN10:1-62183-340-2. The book contains three (3) sections: Health Tips, Health Myths and Health Tricks. The first section (Health Tips) contains thirty two (32) chapters principally focused on the necessary and helpful hints that could promote a healthier and lasting physical fitness, reducing the rate of money wastage on some medical attentions and even sometimes, weight reduction. The second section (Health Myths) contains twenty (20) chapters. This section touches some of the false belief regarding human health and human dieting. The third section (Health Tricks) contains ten (10) chapters. This chapter is largely focused on some of the needful, special and effective skills that has a greater potential of promoting human health. The book has a total number of sixty two (62) chapters and a total pages of two hundreds and seventy eight (278) with section one (Health Tips) carrying a total number of one hundred and fifty one (151) pages, section two (Health Myths) consisting of eighty three (83) pages and section three (Health Tricks) comprising of fourthy three (43) pages. The printing quality of the book is moderately perfect but meanwhile, the write-up was not properly arranged (Lacking of proper page set-up). The Health Tips, Myths and Tricks by by Morton E. Tavel, MD is a well nourished book that contains the necessary ingredients of quality researches, scientifically based reports from consultation of several materials like the author’s personal biomedical experience, scientific publications, accurate and reliable media reports and other trustworthy sources.
The author has done all the required attempts in bringing out quality reports, results from quality thinking and researches. From his report (which appeared to be focused in US), it was noted that, over 70% of the US total population are either overweight or frankly obese. Body Mass Index (BMI) has been recognized as the approach of determining the amount of accumulated weight with BMI of 18-25 (considered normal), BMI of 25-30 (considered overweight) and BMI of over 30 (considered to be frankly obese). Even though, the total weight is within the normal range (18-25), the possibility of cardiovascular diseases could be triggered by the accumulation of fats around the waists rather than legs and hips. Sugary beverages, fats, sodium etc increases the likelihood of obesity. Calories reduction in diet has been pinpointed as the best approach of weight reduction. In 2002, the National Health and Nutrition Survey reported that, skipping and snacking breakfast may likely promote weight gain, elevating blood cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes and heart diseases etc but conversely, taking breakfast daily at the appropriate time and with the necessary dietary contents (fruits and proteins) improves concentration and performance at work, promote endurance and it also facilitate improved eye-hand coordination. According to the medical profession, the most type of fats consumed is the trans-fats (which are formed through industrial process that involves addition of hydrogen to vegetable oil thereby causing the oil to become solid at room temperature). Foods like baked foods, snacks, fried foods etc are some examples of the foods that contains trans-fats which have higher possibility of promoting obesity. In US, coffee has been recognized as the most widely consumed beverages. Coffee contains caffeine (which could help in the reduction of type-2-diabetes, depression, hypertension and obesity). It was recommended that about one cup of coffee is advisable to be consumed daily.
Cocoa butter is the major source of chocolate but consuming chocolate more than excess without any corresponding increase in activity (exercise) increases the risk of obesity. Consumption of chocolate (2 or 3 times weekly) by a heart attack patient, reduce their risk of death by a factor of up to three folds compared to survivors who do not. Foods like biscuits, ice-cream, tortilla, canned soups, chicken pot pie etc have been advised to be avoided because of their risk benefits on human health. More also, despite the fact that, fish consumption have been proven to be an excellent source of proteins, there are still some associated risks (depending on the mercury contents of the fish). Consumption of fish that contains large amount of mercury can damage the brain and nervous system with the highest risk in pregnant women and young children. Fish species like shellfish, sardines, tilapia etc are recommended for consumption (because of their low mercury content) while fish species like swordfish, marlin, grouper, shark etc are advised to be avoided (because of their high mercury content). Fruits like red bell, pepper, potatoes, peas, berries, and nuts etc are advisable to be included in human daily diet because of their health benefits. Fruits and vegetables consumption have been proved scientifically to protect heart diseases and also improve memory cognitive decline in women. Olive oil when used moderately can damage some cancer cells without harming the healthy ones.
Sodium hydrochloride (NaCl) has been clearly pinpointed as the major cause of high blood pressure (hypertension) thereby reducing amount of sodium intake can lower blood pressure, reducing risk of strokes, heart failure and other health diseases. 2300mg of sodium is recommended for daily consumption. Pizza, canned soups, slice breads and sandwishes etc are some examples of foods that contain high sodium contents. In the US alone, if sodium contents of canned foods and restaurant foods were reduced by 50% then, about 150,000 premature deaths per annum could also be prevented. Red meats had also been noted as the major source of saturated fats which encourages type-2-diabetes. More also, arsenic could be found in food, air, soil and water but high exposure to arsenic at the childhood could cause brain problem (neurobehavioral problems, cancer and lung disease). Rice intake minimization have been equally recommended for pregnant women and babies (under the age of 5years) because frequent consumption of rice can probably alter the natural structure of human cells. Cold has also been advised not to be treated with drugs, if possible should be treated with steam inhalation, salt water gargle. Dietary supplements like multivitamin, fish oil, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E, and vitamin K etc can promote human health status while dietary supplements like kava, yohimbe and aconite etc should be avoided. Artificial sweeteners like aspartame, saccharin, sucralose are also recommended for consumption because of their potential health benefits but frequent consumption of artificial sweeteners encourages weight gain. Advisably, consumption of processed foods can be lowered by reading food labels wisely, going for high quality foods, seeking of true satisfaction and avoid meal skipping.
Twelve to fourteen years lifespan reduction have been proven to be attributed to smokers. Smoking causes kidney failure, cancer, intestine damage, stroke, blindness, erectile dysfunction etc but meanwhile, tobacco are now been replaced with electric cigarette called ENDS (Electronic Nicotine Delivery System). Quality sleeping have been noticed to be a vibrant means of nourishing brain sharpness, emotional balance etc. According to the report by National Sleep Foundation, a new born baby (up to 3months) should sleep 14-17hours per day, infants (4-11months) attracts 12-15hours sleeping daily, teenagers (14-17years) should have a sleep of 8-10hours per day and adults (18-64years) attracts 7-9hours sleep per day. Lack of quality sleep can cause obesity, heart diseases and type-2-diabetes. Furthermore, the best and instant benefit of exercise is positive attitude and regular engagement in exercise can prevent lung cancer, breast cancer and uterus cancer. It also increases pain tolerance.
One of the major components of every energy drink is caffeine. Caffeine helps one to be very energetic, jittery and active. 400mg of caffeine is recommended for consumption by healthy adults (18-64years) per day. Pregnant women should consume 200mg of caffeine per day. Genetically Modified Foods (GM-Foods) have been scientifically accepted to be healthy for consumption. But science has not justified whether organic foods are more nutritious than conventional foods. Food irradiation is a technology of controlling food spoilage and eliminating food borne germs. Food irradiation does not make the foods radioactive. Irradiated foods cannot be recognized by sight, taste, smell but can only be recognized by international word (Treated with radiation or irradiated product). Polygraphy technology uses control questions to detect facts by measuring blood pressure, respiration, pulse rate and reaction. But till date, polygraphy technology lacks scientific validation to justify its truthiness.
The Health Tips, Myths and Tricks by Morton E. Tavel, MD have largely to some reasonable apex, justified some dietary distrusts, mythical issues concerning human diets and their associated health benefits. The book has also exposed hidden foods and tactics that can provide excellent health care to humans than they think. The book has forced itself to be at the position of “reference point” because of its nourishment and justifications over human health. The author has perfectly qualified the book titled Health Tips, Myths and Tricks to be read by everyone (excluding children) but food manufacturers, food scientists, food nutritionists, medical doctors, food marketers and herbal doctors needs the book most. So far health issues are global and every human is involved, the book could be reasonably improved by translating it into other languages so as to spread the information: Health Tips, Myths and Tricks to the global audience since all the world countries does not understand English Language. Acronyms and abbreviations are also suggested to be included in the book (so as to provide the sectional definition of all the abbreviations captured). Breaking down of the book into simpler subsections (simplified forms) that can be incorporated into the school curriculum (from primary to tertiary) in order to provide the general or some of the audiences with accurate and reliable information about their health. Some mitigational measures that could reduce health myths exponentially, spreads health tips and tricks includes: firstly, establishing of FDA sub-unit (which would be charged in monitoring their foods dietary constituents) in both manufacturing industries and pharmaceutical industries. Secondly, establishment of laws mandating all TV presenters on health matters and drugs must undergo thorough examination and scrutiny by FDA before the presentation or publication on newspapers. Thirdly, all medical and food related advertisements should also be captured by the laws. Fourthly, the issue of using spiritual intelligence in curing health problems should also be well captured in the book.
Some of the interesting elements in the book are: firstly, grammatical structure of the topics (headings) in each chapter like Eat a Good Breakfast: Was Mother Right or Wrong?, Red Meats: Should You Curtail It?, Dietary Supplements: Some Good, Some Useless and Some Dangerous, Bottled Water: Another Great and Costly Myths. Secondly, direct rejection of some health myths like “forget the energy drinks, they are waste of time, stretching before exercise. Thirdly, quality scientific findings and wider coverage on health issues and fourthly, direct pinpointing of hidden facts about human health and dietary like fruits and vegetables improves brain functioning, caffeine (obtain through coffee intake) makes one to be energetic and jittery etc. some of the least interesting elements are, firstly, paragraph inconsistency. It was noticed that, tab paragraphs, line break paragraphs were inconsistently used throughout the book. Secondly, the write-up was not properly centralized in conformity with margin adhesion (left, right, top and bottom). I rated this book “3 out of 4 stars” because, it touches the most and needful aspects of human beings (foods) which the author provided the vibrant and sound scientific evidences, justifying their health benefits. And also because, Dr. Morton E. Tavel, MD presented the write-up in such a manner that all human beings is now been forced to read this book simply because of its benefits to their personal health. I was convinced not to rate this book neither “1 out of 4”, “2 out of 4” nor “4 out of 4 stars” simply because, the book has proven itself mandatory to be carefully read by anybody of any kind.
