Imagine your worst nightmare come to life; you wake up in a hospital, strapped to the bed, with no memory of how or why you got there. This is where we find the lead character in the opening pages of the thriller, The Lost Identity Casualties, by Kim Ekemar. Prepare yourself for a tour-de-force novel, packed with mystery and intrigue, as we dive head long into the life of Matthias Callaghan.

Told from the first person narrative of the lead character, Matthias soon learns of his brutal torture and disfigurement, which leaves him with a new face and identity. As Matthias begins to unlock the truth of his past, many supporting characters in Matthias's life are introduced: his wife, business partner, father and members of the Russian mafia. All of these individuals add to the mystery surrounding Matthias's attack and torture, as the complex web of lies and deceit slowly unravels. Matthias is determined to find out who ordered the attack on him, in order to exact his revenge.

I was impressed, not only by the number of supporting characters introduced, but by the added details and particulars of these characters. The author also did a superb job of explaining the computer hacking and credit card fraud in the story, as well as providing precise details of the medical procedures completed in the book. Oftentimes, I feel some subjects and information get glossed over in stories, leaving the reader left trying to make sense of it all. Not so with this book, making the overall feel of the story more well rounded and whole.

The only negative, if I can call it that, of the book was my lingering sense of wanting more, almost as if the book ended too suddenly. Therefore, I was ecstatic to learn that this book is the first in a series by Kim Ekemar, The Callaghan Septology. The series should only add more layers of suspense and drama to the Callaghan saga.

My rating for this book is 4 out of 4 stars. The book was professionally edited and contained few grammatical errors. This book will appeal to adult readers who enjoy gripping suspense and mystery reads. It does contain some gruesome and graphic scenes of torture, which some people may find disturbing. Matthias Callaghan is a callous and rough character, not for the faint of heart.
