Jeff is sent on a secret mission to spy and collect data on the approaching hordes of aliens that are wreaking havoc on the outlying settlements. In an attempt to escape, after being discovered by the aliens, he crash lands on a moon where his ship is destroyed and he is killed. He is resurrected by the Ulim who are seemingly everywhere in the universe but at the same time are one. The Ulim reconstitute Jeff back to his apartment on earth completely as his previous self. As a result of his interactions with the Ulim he now has a special power he will need to learn to control. The CDF (Colonial Defense Fleet) have amazing technology and very sophisticated spaceships with an enormous amount of weaponry, however the ships are not fast enough to arrive in time to help the remote settlements. With the help of all the available specialists Jeff will have to learn how to control his new power if the human race is to survive.
As the story unfolds I really enjoyed the way the writers have the characters fit into their roles helping to keep the story moving along smoothly. Admiral Paul Jennings, Jeff's commanding officer, Captain Jo Taylor, Jeff's onetime love interest and Dr. Emma Stewart, Jeff's helper in his attempt to learn how to control his new power are all central characters of the story. All their personalities are brought out smoothly and are easily understood, Their interactions with each other and with Jeff help create a human interest story as well as an adventure theme.
I particularly liked the style of the writing and the exceptional imagination shown by these writers to make the story reach out and grab you from the very first sentence. The emotions the main characters are feeling make it easy to relate to them on a personal level that helps keep the story line moving seamlessly. I am one of those people who truly enjoy a cliff hanger and this novel definitely qualifies as a perfect example. I am very much looking forward to book 2 of the saga.
I found very few things to dislike about this book, the only thing that stands out in that regard is possibly a little to much use of offensive (to some) language. This book was very well written and professionally edited. I found only one typo in the entire novel. I rate this book
