Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks, by Morton E. Tavel, MD, details the rampant myths regarding our health and provides the facts. People have acquired many false ideas about their health over time, and as a result, quite a few companies have decided to take advantage of this by marketing products and services that play on the public’s misinformation. Dr. Tavel takes it upon himself to separate fact from fiction.
The “Tips” section details ways that we can improve our overall health. These include which foods to eat and which to avoid, such as choosing to drink green tea instead of coffee. The “Myths” section covers common beliefs about health and whether or not they are accurate. The “Tricks” section informs the reader about ways that companies can scam customers when providing products that supposedly help or cure whatever is ailing us. Dr. Tavel also explains indicators that the product or service being offered is a hoax, like if a product makes grandiose claims but also has a disclaimer on the label stating that their claims have not been evaluated by the FDA. If that is the case, you have found a pretty good indicator that the effects are overly exaggerated or even nonexistent.
I found this book to be very informative. Dr. Tavel's word choice is not too formal, so reading the text doesn't feel like deciphering a complex medical textbook. The information provided is straightforward and relevant. The issues addressed are those that many people in our modern society struggle with, such as diet and issues with weight.
I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in their health and wants to improve their lifestyle, consumers who want to make smarter purchases with their money, and those who want to know what is real and what isn’t in the medical world. For example, I learned detox tea is actually a hoax. Our body doesn’t even need to be “detoxified” in the first place, as several of our organs do the job naturally. I’m glad I learned this before wasting any more money on it. It’s hard to think of anyone I would not recommend this book to, as I generally think everyone can learn something from it and use it to improve their lives and the lives of those around them.
Overall, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It is entertaining while also being informative. Dr. Tavel covers such a variety of topics that anyone can find something relevant to them. I am altogether very impressed with this book and look forward to using the knowledge I've obtained to improve my personal wellness.
