Demon Freaks, by J.R.R.R (Jim) Hardison, is a book that follows the twin brothers Ron and Bing Slaughter through the most horrifying night of their lives. Both Ron and Bing must pass their SAT’s in order to graduate and go to college, which is where Bing’s focus is trying to stay. Ron, on the other hand, would like nothing more than to have their band practice all night. Their bands drummer Meat is with Ron and offers up his family’s cabin for the night so that they can practice their music, and maybe study.
Before their night can even start the three boys get caught up between a possessed dagger and the two cults wanting the dagger, all while still waiting for their keyboardist Kaitlyn. In all of the action Meat and Kaitlyn find them selves as sacrifices while Ron and Bing struggle to save them. With the fact that they will fail their SAT’s, from lack of preparation, and the possibility of losing their best friends the twins must fight for what they want the most. Will they save their friends before meeting a grizzly end? Will they somehow pass their SAT’s? Will they flip burgers at the same McDonalds their parents manage? You’ll have to read to find out.
I found this book to be engaging and funny. Even with the horror aspect within this book there were little nuggets of humor in some of the tensest situations. The funniest moments I found were as Meat conversed with the possessed dagger. While the dagger can only speak to Meat telepathically Meat speaks out loud in answer causing Kaitlyn to only hear a one-sided conversation. This made for some interesting dialog, and conversations as Kaitlyn tries to figure out whom Meat is talking to when he doesn’t respond to her when she tries to get his attention.
There are many occasions in the book where the point of view changes between groups of characters. The point of view being in third person omniscient. Thankfully there is not confusion as to which group of people the point of view has changed to. I really enjoyed the fact that there were surprises with every turn of the page, secrets for each character to find. The rate at which the story progresses is also timed well. There are some moments which are slow, however, they are followed by moments of action that help to keep the story progressing.
Overall, I am giving Demon Freaks the rating of a 4 out of 4. There were minimal mistakes, none that I could find. The story is well balanced and has an interesting plot that is easy to follow. I recommend this book for anyone that enjoys a little humor with their horror.
