A refreshing reexamination of the Garden of Eden, Who told you that you were naked is a Christian book written by William E. Combs in the year 2016. Published by Carpenter’s Son Publishing, Franklin, Tennessee, in association with Larry Carpenter of Christian Book Services, LLC, all scriptural quotations made in the book were from The Holy Bible, English Standard Version. The book was printed in The United States of America with ISSN: 9768-1-945507-23-6.
The book looks into the life of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden and also discuss the events that lead to the introduction of sin into the world. The book also talks about the off springs of Adam and the possible activities that led to Cain killing his brother Abel. It analyzes the nature of sin, discusses events that led to the introduction of sin into the world, the relationship of faith and how Jesus Christ is the way to defeat the “enemy crouching at the door”.
I love the fact that the author took his readers on a day to day adventure of the activities in the Garden of Eden. He creates an accurate mental picture into the lives of Adam, his companion, Eve, and their children, Cain and Abel. I love the biblical text used as references and explanation of each. The study questions for discussion after each chapter left me with various questions which I was later able to discuss with friends who have not read the book. I was able to seek a more in depth explanation of the lives of Adam, Eve and the relationship of faith.
Although the book was great, I found some parts quite controversial from the words in the bible.
For example, in the first chapter, the author made mention of how a ewe sacrificed her life for Adam from the clutches of a lioness and Adam showed fear . This contradicts Genesis chapters 1 and 2 which state that there was a friendly relationship between man and the animals when he named them and man had a dominion, as commanded by God, over the animals. Furthermore, the author contradicts himself where he mentioned that fear was first showed in the bible after Adam and his companion ate the fruit from the tree of life after he made mention of the fear Adam showed.
The author also talked about the temptation of Eve by the serpent in the absence of her husband, Adam. This contradicts Gen 3:6 which states:
“And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave to her husband with her; and he did eat”.
The author creates a scene whereby Adam was in the fields, threshing wheat when Eve was tempted by the serpent. This is an account which I think shouldn’t have been explained differently from a biblical view.
The book was professionally edited and no errors were detected.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. This is because of the mental picture and adventure the author created in the book. The book was entertaining without changing course in revealing the truth about sin and faith. I think the book would be enjoyed by people who love to read Christian books in search of wisdom and understanding of different events which occurred in the bible.
