The Diary of A Snoopy Cat by R.F. Kristi is about a spunky Siberian kitty named Inca that moves from Paris to London with her family Cara, her prissy Siamese sister, Fromage, her tabby-cat brother who is named after the French cheese their mom makes, Missy or better known as mom the human that the kitties own, and Charlotte a dwarf hamster and Fromage's best friend. Mom runs a cheese shop like the one they own in Paris and it sets in the heart of Kensington. They live in a small cozy little cottage that used to be owned by Aunt Florence, moms only human family. She now lives in Provence, France.
The book starts off with a picture of the “Family Tree” which I thought was very cute and clever since they have a lot of characters in this story it helps to go back a few times and look to see who is actually who. It then goes into introductions of all the family characters and gives a brief little story of everyone in the family.
The story starts eleven days before Christmas and that is when Inca puts in her first entry into the diary because she wants to be a crime detective and keep track of everything they do. This is where she will put all of her crime-fighting stories in for everyone to read about as she fantasizes about becoming the worlds “No. 1 Celebrity Detective Kitty!”
I really love the characters in this book and how the author makes them come alive and the illustrations are super cute as well and quite entertaining although they are in black and white. Kristi really gets into the character of Inca that I actually forgot the story was about animals until she made them meow and bark while they were talking.
This book is very professionally edited and I found no grammatical mistakes or perhaps I was so into the story I missed them but I doubt that because I am usually the stickler when it comes to that.
Even though I found the story a good read and entertaining there were a few things I found that could have been done differently to make the book a bit better which is why I am giving this book 3 out of 4 stars. I was not crazy about the fact the author thought it was very humorous to let the kitties call someone names even though he was the villain in the story I thought that calling someone names was a bit harsh also the author kept using different tenses in the story and sometimes it was hard to tell who was speaking. I had to reread a few sentences to figure out if I missed something or who was actually speaking at that moment. And last I do believe there were moments when the author rambled a bit which made the middle of the book a bit slow but once the story got started it was really good, and entertaining, and quite funny.
I would recommend this chapter book to anyone who has a young reader at the age level for this book between the ages of 8-12. My granddaughter is 7 and she read it with almost no problems and perhaps a young reader over 12 may think it a little childish.
The story takes place during Christmas and that I think that it would make this an excellent Christmas present for any child boy or girl. Children who love books with talking animals will love this book.
