I rate the book Heartaches 3: Bad Boy Vibes, 3 out of 4 stars. This is a story of people coming together to fight a common evil and persevering. I also read the prior two books, so I had insight as to what was going on. I like the fact that these books take you on a journey and make you feel like you’re living with the characters. This is a feature I appreciate in a series of books. Toward the beginning of this book there was something brought up about how Peter Preston (one of the main antagonists) “peddled” his sons off to Eric (who is another bad guy). This was not elaborated on at any point. I was interested in knowing more details about that. For instance, what did they mean by peddled?
Did he pawn them off to this other bad guy in a sexual manner? Curiosity was peaked at that moment, but deflated when it was not made clear later in the story. I was curious just how bad the bad guys were. Not that it wasn’t made clear already. I also felt there were a lot of flash backs, dreams, and memories that occurred in the story. They weren’t clear. At times I didn’t know when something was actually happening or if it was a dream or memory. That made it a harder read than I anticipated.
Some authors put that sort of stuff in italics. This way it’s clearer to the reader that it’s different. When I see paragraphs in italics I know that this may be a dream, or memory that is occurring. The story does pick up where the other left off, which I like. The main characters are in a mad dash to foil one another. The good guys are trying to expose and trap the bad guys. Meanwhile the bad guys always seem to be one step ahead. There are more characters that are introduced in this book. They add a very interesting dynamic to the story that wasn’t there before.
Seems the antagonists in the series made plenty of enemies that are bent on seeing them pay for their misdeeds. The guys that were painted as horrible monsters in previous books have a new light shed upon them. Family ties are exposed and elaborated upon. There are horrible monsters out there…however, they may not be horrible because that’s who or what they are. They may be horrible because of where they come from, how they were raised and what they’ve been made to do or believe growing up. It is very sad to see a parent use their children and everyone else around them to serve their own purposes.
In this book, lives were ruined, repaired, lost and began. This emphasizes the fact that things have to get worse before they can get better. You have to be totally broken sometimes so that the pieces can be put back together again. The characters persevered and stuck with each other to fight a common evil. Plots came to light.
Schemes were hatched, and either paid off or did not. Some got the happily ever after they needed. Not necessarily what they wanted, just as life does. In the end however, things worked out just as they should. It was a very nice journey to go on with the author and characters. I’m happy with how it ended. Other readers will be pleased with the ending as well. Typos were at a minimum in this book. There were no misspellings. However, there were a few words that didn’t belong.
