The book Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon starts with the story of Tom Olsen preparing for a trip to the mountains when he is suddenly introduced to a granddaughter that he never knew he had, Sarah Cooley. Now having a 13 year old under his care Tom finds himself lost on what to do, but eventually it is decided that Sarah goes along with the trip. What started as another normal hike now becomes something more as mysteries and secrets are revealed, stories will be told and bonds will be formed. Set in the wild terrain of the Olympic Peninsula, Strong Heart is a book of adventure and discovery with a touch of magic. It is also the first book in the Strong Heart Series.
Categorized into the genre of ‘Other Fiction’, Strong Heart incorporates historical themes and discussions about the Ice Age and human origin in its plotline. There are included scientific debates and theories sprinkled between some characters’ conversations, but are not as boring as they sound and are not too long. Reading through them were quite informative and the way it was delivered was amusing. Additionally, it has topics presenting of modern day issues which make the book relatable.
Strong Heart is definitely a page-turner, I could not bear to put it aside even for occasional toilet breaks, it was that captivating. There were no obvious grammatical errors and the story flow was easy to follow. All in all, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
The characters and character development in the story are two of the reasons why I loved reading this book. I was surprised by how quickly I was able to get to know each character in the story. The character introductions were not rushed or overbearing unlike other starting books of a series. You get to know the characters at a steady pace as the story progresses, bits and pieces of their own stories put into the mix reveal their past. The author has a unique way of writing a character’s dialogue and actions which make them stand out with distinctive personalities. Soon you’ll begin to notice their certain quirks and behaviors which will either make you like or dislike them.
There are adult themes mentioned in the book though, along with vivid descriptions of blood, gore, and violence in some scenes, not too much but sufficient enough for me to recommend this book for people 18 years old and above, specifically those who are not bothered by such imageries. People who like history and science may find this book interesting as well.
