Title: Unbalanced by, Courtney Shepard.
Genre: Fantasy, Romance.
Review by: Khadija Ahmed.
I found Unbalanced by Courtney Shepard to be a great paranormal romance. At the end I was literally left ‘unbalanced’. The story may come off at first as your typical good versus evil, but it has so much more to offer entirely. The author’s imagination is indescribable; it isn’t your typical fantasy book as Shepard brings danger and mystery along with romance and betrayal.
My favourite thing about the story was the main character, Asha, who was portrayed as this phenomenal character, brave and strong- a female in the lead role is something that we all want to see. Asha is a great role model for young girls to look up to, she also shows that even the strongest women have flaws, can make mistakes and can also be broken. That doesn’t mean they can’t get back up and fight back. ‘Unbalanced’ may be a great start to a series that portrays feminism. The story is about four sisters fighting against the greater evil. Though the book has a number of important characters, it mainly focuses on Asha and really shows her as this great woman. The book opened to a strong scene, and from this moment I could tell what Asha was really about, and she was not to be messed with.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. The reason for this would be the thing that slowed me down from reading, the detail. There are some books that have me hooked immediately, then there are those that take time and that is due to the excessive amount of detail. This does not take away the phenomenon that is ‘Unbalanced’, it is still a great book though, I do feel that the detail in some places were a bit much for my liking. An example would be right at the start when Asha first ran off into the jungle, it didn’t quite make sense to me what was happening with the amount of detail going on, my mind was a bit muddled. It was only when she got to use her powers things started to make a little more sense, and even then it didn’t as much as I would have hoped.
I had not seemed to have noticed any errors or typos, as this book was fast-paced and with a lot going on all at once. Other than the excessive detail in a few places, ‘Unbalanced’ is an easy flowing fantasy with action, twists and turns. The magical element being used right from the start was a great idea, from that moment I knew there wasn’t much time to waste and I was not at all disappointed. I am very much excited to read the rest of the series.
