Review of The HEALing Revolution Diet
The HEALing Revolution Diet by Dr. Randall Hansen, Ph.D., highlights the current plight faced by societies globally, with a special emphasis on the United States. We are the sickest we have ever been, with chronic diseases running rampant in the population. Additionally, our food quality is at its worst state yet due to multiple reasons, which are highlighted in the book. The author uses unbiased, evidence-based science and anecdotes (some of which are personal) to suggest an effective intervention, known as the “Healing Revolution Diet,” that anyone can adopt.
The Healing Revolution Diet is a holistic “approach to eating and living” based on a set of principles that not only provides guidelines for the consumption and acquisition of food, but also addresses other aspects of living, including supplements, physical activity, spirituality, social connections, physical environment, and past trauma. The ultimate goal of the Healing Revolution Diet goes beyond achieving longevity of life and evolves into having a long “healthspan,” meaning living a rich, long, and healthy life. It also highlights how one can healthily manage weight in the long term without resorting to highly restrictive practices.
While the author proposes some guidelines regarding added sugar, seed oils, fat, fiber, and conventional crops, among other things, they are a strong advocate for flexibility over strict adherence to rules. The benefit of the Healing Revolution approach is that each individual has the freedom to choose the diet and lifestyle that is right for them based on the Healing Revolution guidelines and principles, so long as the choices being made are not detrimental to well-being. The book serves as a great educational resource, providing practical information including healthy recipes, guidelines on food items and physical activity regimens, and website information on ethical farmers and ranchers that might be in your locality.
Another strong feature of the book is its inclusion of historical events that explain the flawed nutrition, healthcare, and pharmaceutical industries, as well as the dependence on conventional farming and chemicals that have resulted in the low-quality soil, sick livestock, and nutrient-poor crops seen today. The work done by the author was also not done in isolation, as they dedicated space for the findings from other nutrition professionals to be included in the book.
While I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book, I believe it could be improved by including references for all the statistics stated and providing the full meaning of some acronyms, such as LSD, DHA, BMT, HIIT, and others, to ensure full comprehension by the reader. Additionally, to reduce confusion, the author could have steered away from labelling the Healing Revolution Diet a “diet,” given the many negative connotations that are associated with the term. It might have been beneficial to consider labelling it the “Healing Revolution Intervention” or the “Healing Revolution Approach,” for instance.
I would give this book a rating of 4 out of 5. This is because the book was full of so much practical information and was well organized for readers to easily locate information. The author explained several scientific concepts, like the gut microbiome and mitochondrial health, in a manner understandable to the general public, but could have been more elaborate in referencing scientific findings and clarifying the full meaning of some acronyms.
