I love reading books with my two year old that make her giggle and laugh. We love pointing out the silly, the extraordinary, and even the “eww, gross!” parts of her stories. Sigfried’s Smelly Socks! by Len Foley is a delightfully disgusting book for kids, and would make a fun addition to any little kid’s library. Each page is filled with surprisingly gross items that would make Sigfried’s book smell, until we finally reach those nasty, stinky socks, and Sigfried’s solution to the problem.

Sigfried’s Smelly Socks! explores why Sigfried’s book smells so bad. He talks about all the gross things he and his family members have left in his book, including his dirty old socks. At the end of the book he offers a surprising and hilarious solution to his stinky sock problem that will make little kids roll with laughter and giggles. As I read the conclusion, I couldn’t help but raise my eyebrows with surprise and let out a chuckle before I turned right around and read it to my daughter!

I love the silliness of this book! The prose is easy and fun, and would be a great beginner book for young ones learning how to read. Although some of the rhymes have to stretch a bit to make it work, the majority of the rhymes are spot on and very funny. The art in this book is an imaginative mix of cartoons and photos of real items, such as pizza and potatoes. It uses a few good words that aren’t too common in children’s books, such as “lard”, which is a great learning opportunity for kids to expand their vocabulary beyond the cookie cutter words we usually find in children’s books.

This book is intended for toddlers through young school age children. I would even consider this a great book for middle schoolers, as they tend to love gross, silly stuff. It would be a great addition to any young child’s bookshelf as they explore the world of stink with their parents. They’ll giggle their way through this stinky book and will be delighted with the hilarious ending. This book is not intended for junior high schoolers and up.

I rate Sigfried’s Smelly Socks! 3 out of 4 stars. I would have loved to give this book 4 stars, but I found an error with the punctuation. This book is so great for young kids to bond with their parents over the silly pictures and funny rhymes. The only thing I didn’t care for was the fact that a few of the rhymes didn’t quite work. Overall, I think this is a fantastic book for little kids.
