The Vagus Nerve Protocol by Adele Payne contains a series of doable exercises that are meant to put those experiencing the negative emotions back into a safe, connected, and present mode. In the first few chapters, Adele gives an explanation of the vagus nerve and the protocol. The autonomic nervous system has three modes, among which there is one ideal state that we need to return to when falling into the other two, less safe states.

As the name suggests, the book focuses on the vagus nerve, which can influence whether we are in a state of anxiety or safety. A lot of research must have gone into this topic, as the terminology related to the protocol is straightforward to understand and gives me a deeply relaxing reading experience. The book, in my opinion, creates a new way to deal with the negative. I love seeing the negative through this clear and pleasant lens. I believe the book seeks to track down the profound reason why we suffer from anxiety and constant tiredness, instead of blaming us for feeling negative emotions. What is written in the protocol is just a soothing melody played to reassure those stuck in survival mode that they are safe and do not need to try so hard to get better.

I could hardly find anything I disliked about this book, but I took one star off because I personally would have liked to see more on how the protocol works, especially the importance of staying present while building new rhythms in our lives. That is just my personal preference, though. It does not mean this book lacks logic and scientific grounding. Overall, I rate it 4 out of 5 stars.

Readers who are interested in a new way to make peace with their emotions will want to give this book a try.
