Demon freaks by J. R. R. R Hardison is an interesting horror comedy. This book is young adult, fast paced, action oriented and entertaining. Lovers of funny supernatural tales will surely enjoy reading this book.

It all starts on a night before the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test). The twin brothers, Bing and Ron, and their band mates, Meat and Kaitlyn, plan to both rehearse and study together at a cabin. Bing and Ron have to get good enough results or else they will end up working in McDonald’s like their parents. They cram so hard so as to excel in their SATs and go to good schools.

A storm brings their history teacher, some freaky golfers and demonic followers. Members of the twins’ high school punk band get captured by the golfers and they must save them before they are offered as a sacrifice. What happens to Meat after he gets possessed by a dagger? What do Bing, Ron and Kaitlyn do to save him and prevent a powerful demon from being released to the world? Go to a terrifying adventure with Kaitlyn, Bing and Ron, and find out the answers to these questions in Demon freaks.

The book has been authored in third-person omniscient point of view. It is a plot-driven story with vivid descriptions that enables readers to have good imaginations for most scenes. The emotions in the book are well expressed, sincere and even the readers can put themselves in the shoes of the main character and to some extend feel what they are feeling. The main characters have amusing personalities and the author has introduced them early enough. There is, however, more room for character development. I would also say that the conclusion is satisfactory.

It was not easy to come across grammatical errors. The book was a quick read but then the plot weakens as the book continues on. Most of the characters do not have a clear background story, women are not given much roles except for Kaitlyn and the reactions of the main characters were unrealistic at times. I think the book is a little bit gender biased. It was also easy to predict the outcomes of some events and at times, readers anticipate less. This causes the story to be too obvious to the reader.

I rate Demon freaks three out of four stars. I would recommend it to young adults who love horror comedy and fans of supernatural tales.

I was curious to find out what others thought about this book. I'm a bit shocked to be honest, but I'm glad you like the book!

What's not to like? How many books let's their protagonists battle it out in a dark tunnel, attacked on all sides by nightmarish creatures, and actually showcase, in all its terrific glory, the protagonists gets butchered up...almost. the author of this book isn't afraid to push the boundaries of teenage fiction. And for that alone, he deserves a star.
