Andalusian in Jerusalem written by Mois Benarroch tells the story of a Spanish writer who tells his intimate friend when he was just eight years old what was supposed to be a false secret, and this friend responds with " I knew it!" and with that statement what was supposed to be a secret spread like wild fire and no matter how hard he tried to explain he invented it no one believed him .
The words which he spoke leads him to being a respected writer and he is invited to Israel for a writer's festival where he ends up meeting a senile old woman who resembles his deceased mother and is convinced he is her son who disappeared in the Lebanon war. He meets up with his good friend after this encounter and realises his friend dreamt what happened to him and in the course of their discussion he is told by his friend, (Charly), that he has caught the Jerusalem madness.
The novel is quite interesting and I like the poetic edge which the author gives to it especially in Charly's story which just happens to be a story within a story . I really do not like way the protagonist moves from his reality into another world in his friend, Charly's novel, and the fact that the conversations in Charly's novel were a bit disjointed thereby making it a tad difficult for me to keep up and a bit confusing at some point. I really love the touch of originality with which the book is written and the transition from generation to generation which is seen in Charly's novel is awesome but I least like the fact that the grammar is not very accurate which takes the fun out a bit but I understand the reason for that being that it was translated.
To a great extent I enjoyed the book all with the streets that are only seen at night and disappears during the day;his being introduced to a woman who is supposedly is granddaughter and he realises he is attracted to after being attracted to Nora for a while now . I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars considering the fact that I feel the story is told in a kind of disjointed manner especially when Guillemor begins to read through Charly's work and the grammatical errors. I feel this novel will appeal a great deal to lovers of history;mystery and poetic works.
To sum it all, Andalusian in Jerusalem is a very interesting book with funny and weird characters like I can't just fathom how a man ends up having up to four women he wants to hook up with being taken from him by other men who just happens to be called Jorge or being abducted only to be told to write about the water theory. It was an educating novel indeed.
