Ageing is inevitable for everyone. This causes Detective Jay Magruder to retire from his job in Houston for a slower-paced job in a slower-paced town. However, boredom motivates Magruder to look through the cold case files. One case that entails a double homicide of a couple that he is rather familiar with catches his attention. The fact that it is a closed case amongst the cold case files motivates him even more to have it reopened. With the success of having it reopened, he puts out an ad on Facebook. Within no time, a young man reaches out to him, offering to give the detective all the details he needs, not for the reward offered but for unveiling the truth as well. In D.C. Scott’s book, Precision, this man recounts the tumultuous love life and bittersweet backstory of the male victim, John Riley Logan, to the detective.

I loved the fact that the title ‘Precision’ was perfectly embodied in the characters, as each character was meticulous in one way or another. The book kept me in a state of suspense, as the plot developed in such a way that every character was a possible suspect. I also loved the fact that it’s not your typical murder novel. This novel is as romantic as it is mysterious.

There was not much to dislike about this book. I, however, do feel like the author could’ve better diversified the characters, as most of them were medical professionals and divorcees. It would’ve been nicer if their backgrounds and livelihoods were different. I also found the number of characters excessive; I couldn’t keep up with some of them or their storylines.

I give this book a rating of 4 out of 5 stars. The multiple mistakes that I came across robbed it of a perfect rating. However, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The story was being narrated by one of the characters to the detective, but I felt like it was being narrated to me. This made me develop an emotional connection with the characters. The book has a cliffhanger ending, so hopefully I’ll follow up with the sequel because I was so invested in this beautifully crafted story.

I would recommend this book to those who love murder mysteries. Medical studies, romance and sports are major themes in this book, so I would also recommend it to anyone who takes an interest in these topics.
