Deceptive Calm shows what it is like to have a true friend who will stay by your side no matter what. Vanessa, the main character, had a hard life growing up. She was dropped off at the orphanage when she was just two days old. Vanessa wasn’t sure of her place in the world because she was light-skinned, so sometimes people thought she was white. No one was sure of her race because they never saw her parents, and she was left at an all-Black orphanage. Trisha convinces Vanessa to get a job at the tomato sheds. While working at the tomato sheds and finding out about illegal aliens and how they change their identities by getting new birth certificates, Vanessa decides to do the same, and she gets a new birth certificate that says she is white. After getting her new birth certificate, things began to look up for her, and she went to UC Berkeley in California. Vanessa meets a man named Tod Von Westerkamp, and she ends up marrying him. Tod’s family is powerful, and they treat Vanessa wrongly even before they find out she is Black. Tod and his family feel they can treat people wrongly because they are rich. Everything comes crashing down for Vanessa when her son is diagnosed with sickle cell disease because that is a Black disease. The Westerkamps are not happy about this. Through it all, her friend Trisha was by her side. The relationship between Vanessa and Trisha was powerful. No matter what Vanessa had going on, Trisha was by her side. Trisha did not care that Vanessa was Black. She helped Vanessa and protected her.
Deceptive Calm by Patricia Skipper is a 5/5.The book is very well written. There are no grammatical errors, and the book was professionally edited. The only thing I dislike about the book is that it starts a little slow, but the pace picks up towards the middle of the book. Other than the slow start, I liked the book a lot. Once you get to the middle of the book, you will not be able to put the book down. I was on the edge of my seat and could not wait to see what happened next. When I first read the synopsis, I worried that the book would be too focused on race and become overwhelming, especially with how the world is now.
There are curse words used in the book. There are also some racial slurs used, but not too many that it would make you want to stop reading. Some sexual scenes are described in detail, so I would say this book is for 18-year-old people and up. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes romance mixed with a little mystery. The book was a great read, and I would recommend it. Patricia Skipper is a great author, I will check out more of her work.
