Yesterday by Samyann is a book about the two main characters, Amanda and Matt, discovering how they are connected in the present by exploring their past lives. After meeting in the present, the two must discover what the antique clock Amanda bought has to do with them. Amanda is resistant to the thought of being connected, and highly skeptical of the reality of reincarnation. Matt, on the other hand, is more open to the thought of past lives. Throughout the book, we the readers are taken on an intense journey into the past via regression therapy.

Overall, I did enjoy the book. I appreciated the premise of the book. It skillfully introduced the topic of reincarnation, and the connection of souls throughout their lives. It makes this book feel very fantastic and whimsical. Who doesn’t like the thought of being connected to loved ones in every life?

There were several moments in Yesterday when I felt as though I could not stop reading it. This book most likely appeals to people who enjoy historical fiction. I particularly enjoyed the historical moments. There seemed to be a lot of care and research that went into this book. The description of antiques and the historic events were well described, and I felt as though I was there myself.

I rate Yesterday 3 out of 4 stars. I personally had a very difficult time getting started with this book. I felt as though I was thrown straight into action with no buildup of the main character, Amanda. She has knowledge of antiques that is not explained until near the end of the book. I was also a thrown off balance by how little we learn about her until we are almost finished with the book.

Once I got started, I continually felt thrown off balance by the way the book changes timelines. I also felt as though the “present” timeline had some disjointed moments as well. The romance felt a little forced at times, and I feel as though I did not get to see the characters progress naturally. More often than not, I found myself skimming through the present sections just to get to Amanda’s regressions.

All in all, I found this book to be satisfactory, but in need of a little polishing. I truly enjoyed the story line and the historical parts, but I felt a little rushed in character development. There were also several moments when I questioned how the characters had gotten to a specific point. This is a good read if you like historical fiction.
