The book Who Told You That You Were Naked? by William Combs is a well written thought provoking book on the concept of sin and how it affects our lives and relationship with God. The author tells once again, the all too popular story of the Garden of Eden. But this time, it is told in such a way that we actually pause and think about the events in the garden and their significance. Adam is no longer just a character from the often told story of creation. He becomes like us, having our thoughts and emotions, making it more relatable to the reader. I for one have read and heard the story of Adam and Eve countless times but never has it stuck to me as it did after reading this book.

The major take away from Who Told You That You Were Naked? is to trust God completely, and accept that he knows what is best for us. The author reminds us that the best way to please God is to submit to His will and trust in the Holy Spirit. God’s will for Adam and Eve was for them to remain exactly how they were. Our world today would probably have been different if Eve trusted that God made her just as wise as she should be. But her inordinate desire to be better (more like God) made her fall for the serpent’s deceit. We too, often exhaust ourselves with worries about what and how we think we should be, and we fail to think that maybe, just maybe, we are just how God wants us to be. Like the author asks in the book “Who told you that you need to be thinner, younger, healthier, prettier, more athletic, more intelligent…?”

If you are looking for books to help build your faith, I would really recommend this book as one of them. In trying to please God, we often get lost in focusing on trying to commit as less sin as possible, and by doing this we become slaves to Sin. With reference to various bible passages, William shows us the fault in trying to please God this way. He suggests instead, building a relationship with God, where we can hear Him speak to us and guide us.

I found the study questions at the end of each chapter very interesting and helpful. I tried to answer these questions by really thinking about them and looking up the suggested bible verses related to them. It was for me, a subtle form of meditation. They would make for great topic of discussions for friends who are interested in the Bible.

What I love most about this book, is the author’s writing style. It is not your typical religious book. The way he narrates the bible stories make it fun to read. Also, I found his personal testimonies truly inspiring.

I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because it was truly a refreshing read and it has made me more interested in reading books like this, although I wish it was a little less theological. The author put a lot of effort in analyzing certain words and phrases, which to some people might be a good thing but I felt this was interrupting the flow of the message of the book. I would advice not to read this book in a rush. Take your time, get your bible, a glass of water and let it all soak in.
