Patricia Skipper does a great job with Deceptive Calm. This book deserves 4 out of 5 stars. The story was an enjoyable quick read that kept me wanting to know what happened next. This is a story of true love with historical context embedded. The author does a great job with giving the reader a glimpse into the racial and social tensions experienced during the late 60s and early 70s. While a work of fiction, the book sheds light to the realities of a racially segregated world that existed. It also shows how some situations improved as the years went on, but still racial discrimination still remained as the book went into the 80s. It is also interesting to see how some of these issues continue to exist even during today’s times. It leaves you contemplating how sometimes we often revisit the same struggles despite the time we are living in.
The book does contain profanity and racial slurs that some may find offensive. There is also sexual content throughout the book that may not be suitable for younger readers. I understand the intent of the author but some of the scenes were very vulgar and explicit. Some other topics that may be triggering include abortion and acts from the KKK.
The author builds the character’s stories throughout the book, giving the reader an idea of their individual personal struggles. The struggles are shown from a variety of perspectives, the black, the white, the rich, the privileged and the average citizen. I loved how true Vanessa and Tricia stayed to each other and the devotion that was portrayed through their friendship.
I was a little disappointed with the ending. More details could have been given. Some of the story just needed more details and conclusion. It certainly left me wanting more clarity and a feeling that the story wasn’t quite complete.
