The current trend right now is that, most people are becoming more mindful of their health and what they eat. Health Tips, Myths and Tricks by Morton E. Tavel, MD is a good pocket handbook if you want to know health facts and common misconceptions about some health claims. The book is divided into three parts as reflected in the title and each chapter presents a health topic which is discussed broadly.

You can’t be fooled by this book, as it is written by a medical professional. Also, the health claims presented in each chapter are backed up by scientific evidence, research and statistics. This gives you the assurance that what is written here is legitimate and accurate. Furthermore, I like how the material was also based on the eclectic collection of experiences by the author, which creates a plethora of topics on health, which you can choose to read based on your special interest.

This book will most likely appeal to health conscious individuals and this will greatly benefit the general public. Before reading this book, I thought this material will just reinforce what I already know as I’m a health junkie myself, but I was actually blown away by the facts that I just learned. The topics presented regarding health and wellness are beneficial in promoting good health habits and better purchasing options of an individual. Some examples are about supplements, the benefits of eating breakfast, trans fat consumption, regular exercise, coffee and more.

Interestingly, there are a lot of conspiracy theories in the health sector as well. Tavel, points out what products to avoid and what is not necessary to buy. This gives awareness to the general public, thereby mitigating the spread of fallacies and misconceptions. Even the health industry has its own scams that mislead the people, so this is a good arsenal to combat those scams and avoid wasting money on products that mislead us.

I rate this book a 3 out of 4 stars since this book is of great help in promotion of health and wellness of the reader. The tips are great to know, the myths are a revelation and the tricks are very helpful. I gave a 3 because it’s not an easy read and some facts are overwhelming for the lay people, but since I’m in the medical field it is somewhat easy for me to understand. There are also minimal grammatical errors but the most obvious is the clerical error of the title at the cover page of the book.
