Enpirion, nicknamed Piri, is a Seri soldier but stands out from his fellow Seri. He seems to have a stronger connection to the Source, a form of energy in his world, compared to those around him. The Source serves as the world's energy — it is used to illuminate lights, power appliances, forge weapons, and even to heal. Piri was kidnapped as a child and stolen away to be trained into an unparalleled weapon. He has just been moved from the capital to the Watch, a far-off establishment where a group of Seri military and civilians live and must now determine how he envisions his path forward. The book follows Piri’s journey and struggle, as an opposing power grows more threatening in their universe, while he navigates relationships, past mental scars, and the looming possibility of war.

I give this book a glowing five stars. I could not think of anything to improve. Both the pacing for this book along with the characters’ development were all I could've asked for in a fantasy book. Piri’s struggle with his mental health and navigating the foreign idea of friendship made me grow all the more invested in his future and well-being as a character. The pace was very reasonable throughout - there was always something happening, but it never felt rushed, and even when Piri went through slower periods with less action, there was still character growth that had me hooked. I felt the author did a great job of keeping me in suspense and not giving all of the details of Piri’s history without leaving me frustrated at the lack of information.

I appreciated that I haven't really read about any world exactly like this one. I most definitely grew very fond of Piri but also quite fond of Neph, who seems infallible in almost every interaction (how can someone be so patient, kind, and understanding?). I would say this falls more-or-less into the apocalyptic genre, rather than post-apocalyptic. There was very little sexual content in the book, I would probably rate it a ⅕ on a scale of sexual content (think "fade-to-black"). I would overall definitely recommend this to any fantasy-book-lovers, who love an outcast for whom to root.
