About the book

Heartaches is one of the literary works that you want to reread but then you want to throw it away, only to collect it moments later and resume where you left. If you are conversant with the works of H.M Irwing you may know what am talking about; he has the ability to make you feel frustrated when he wants you to but also hold your suspense till the last page. Now, this one is about two lovebirds who find themselves in the center of a date drug trafficking ring.

Ann Simmons is optioned to a date drug trafficking family by her half-brother. Matt Preston, her boyfriend, has her high on date drugs, takes advantage of her and presents her to the not so large Preston family. Anna is still struggling with the trauma when she meets with Rafael Louis Brown AKA Rafe. He too is not yet over his experiences in a Syrian camp where he was reduced to a sex slave by his boss till he decided enough is enough.

The Prestons’ won’t let go of their victim, Anna. Eric Dayton, Rafe’s former boss and well-connected drug lord won’t let go of him too. What will happen when the Prestons’ join forces with Eric Dayton? Will Anna succeed in finding justice for herself? Will Rafe succeed in bringing his former boss down; will they both get over their past fears?

One thing I have learned to like about this novel is the fact that H.M makes me feel the same way Ann is feeling. I’ve had to throw my pc away when she becomes inert at the hands of the Preston’s. I feel the pain, the frustration and the anger mixed with fear for her. Am equally happy with her little successes like when she realizes the Preston’s no longer affect her. One thing though, before you understand Anna’s underlying emotions, her psychological state and her inner dragon, you might be misled to take her for a half wit, which she isn’t.

This book has rendered to me through a completely different angle what victims of sexual assault contend with, both physically and psychologically. The pain of knowing it happened and the helplessness of realizing you are at a loss for action, the determination to put an end to it all and the fear for your life and what might happen to you, plus the general stigma associated.

This naughtily graphical piece has had me turning pages till I realized I couldn’t have enough of it. I don’t know if it’s the flow of the story itself or lack of typos and other mistakes. Heartaches is simply professional. I give it a rating of 4 out of 4.

I recommend Heartaches to everyone who likes reading romantic literature. With a timeline full of suspense and vivid descriptions am sure nobody would stop till they have turned the last page.
