What The Pet Food Industry is Not Telling You by Dr. Stephanie Krol is an inspiring text full of information intended to help pet owners overcome their pet’s health challenges and provide those pets with the best, longest, and healthiest lives possible. Dr. Krol begins her book by sharing her own experiences with her beloved dog, Winston. When her seemingly healthy pal took a turn for the worst and was given news from the veterinarians that the best-case scenario would be surgery and not a favorable road ahead, Dr. Krol sought out natural options to protect her furry friend and provide him with the best future possible. Backed by years of experience and knowledge of functional medicine, this animal advocate came up with a species-specific diet that helped her beloved Winston overcome his illness, and has now been helping many other pets find health and happiness.

In the book, Dr. Stephanie Krol explains the symptoms that many pets face that are warning signs for potential disease or cancer. These signs include itchiness, dry skin, digestion disturbances, and lethargy. She goes on to explain how the treatment for such concerns, or prevention of them, should take an “inside out approach”. This approach refers to how the diet and whatever goes into the body should take precedence over what is outside of the body. Along with that, if there is an external problem with a pet, the pet-owner should look on the inside, which suggests their diet.

The beginning of the book discusses science-backed reasons and evidence for this diet change and the clues that pet-owners should look for that suggest a change is necessary. Between chapters 6 and 8, Dr. Krol explains the details of her species-specific diet. This is also where she explains how to make it affordable, manageable, and effective. She then provides examples of the types and amounts of food that should be given during each stage of this diet.

This book provides exceptional information for the pet-owner to best overcome health concerns of their furry pals. I found it quite convicting and motivational to make a change for my pets to best increase their health and longevity! Her personal story is inspiring for all pet owners currently facing the battles of pet health, often deemed as “old dog problems”. I rated this book a 4 out of 5 stars. The lack of one star was due to the repetitiveness in the beginning of the book. During the first five chapters, it was often repeated that information would be provided in the upcoming chapters. I also found some of the facts, and the comparison of dogs to wolves, to be highly repetitive. Nevertheless, this book was an excellent resource for pet-owners and I am happy to share it!
