By Invitation Only by Nicholas L. Maze details a variety of ways Christian believers have been invited to grow closer to God in their relationship. The author uses the idea of an invitation to show how believers are summoned by God through a variety of ways including the church, reading God’s Holy Bible, praying, and giving. Other aspects of the Christian walk, such as health and wellness, the devil, God’s power, and prosperity, are elaborated on.

Although the information provided is helpful, it is simply a brief overview of the Christian life. This book is suggested for Christians new to the faith, as it covers multiple topics of the faith, but does not go into great depth. Scriptures are referenced, but no exegesis is done. For those who have been of the faith for a number of years, this book serves as a review or motivation to remember the basics of their beliefs. If one is looking for an in-depth description of these invitations and how to implement them in the life of a Christian, this book is not the place that will be found. The information is surface-level at best. Much of the information is repeated or restated with no new or unique perspectives.

This book reads like a new, enthusiastic preacher who, although passionate about the topics, doesn’t have much direction or organization for their delivery. The author briefly touches on their personal experiences, but they do not give much context for those who have not read their previously written books. The result of the lack of background knowledge and details causes the statements to be less effective. Although the book covers many topics, the depth of knowledge is quite shallow. This book would be more effective if practical applications were given or examples were provided. I would rate By Invitation Only a 3 out of 5 for these reasons.
