Author Shannon Duncan provides an honest and unvarnished description of his own experience using psychedelics to treat trauma in Coming Full Circle: Healing Trauma Using Psychedelics. Early in life, Duncan experienced emotional abuse from his mother as a single parent and was constantly terrified of losing the things he valued most. When his health was failing him, he turned more and more to psychedelic drugs as a coping mechanism. It was the deep understanding he developed from those experiences, hidden from conscious insight, that helped him come to acceptance and heal. The book investigates psychedelics for their possible therapeutic benefit and gives scientific and cultural background explanations on a variety of chemicals, including ketamine, MDMA, psilocybin, and ayahuasca.

In this book, the author equips the reader with both knowledge and reflection. He speaks of the social, scientific, and historical impacts of therapeutic psychedelics, together with their complexity and risk. His unrestrained vulnerability and attention to detail really touched me. For those who are going through similar challenges, the personal life experiences he shared in these pages are a real source of hope and inspiration.

I would really give this book a rating of five out of five stars. My colleagues working in the wellness/healing arena have heard me prescribe this very book. This was, actually, my first reading in that regard, but I must admit I felt that it was rather all-encompassing and well-rounded. For sure, a high bar has been set by this book for those in this genre that follow. Ironically, I actually liked all the chapters of the book and did not find any errors.

This is a book in which the author shares first-hand accounts of psychedelics being used for the first time to heal emotional scars. He explains how our mental health can affect our well-being in a big way and how emotional and mental freedom can bring positive changes into our lives. This also discusses quite candidly the ways through which trauma, abuse, and hopelessness impact society. This book introduces a new kind of therapy using psychedelics—substances famously known for their mind-expanding abilities—to treat these fragile mental states. I didn't hate anything about the book.
