Heartaches – Bad Boy Vibes
The book written by H M Irwing is mainly about a teenage girl named Anna Walter-Simmons who encountered series of bad events in her life such as the death of her father that is caused by her stepbrother and also being raped by not only her boyfriend of six months but also his brother and father. With the knowledge that her sufferings are caused by her stepbrother, Brian, she became closed and suffered trauma. Upon the forcing of her mother, she attended a family gathering and there she met a guy name Rafe Luis Brown who is a soldier who just returned from a war in Syria. The story then continues to develop with Anna sharing her secrets about the rape and sexual harassment with Rafe after certain circumstances. The plot continues to thicken as more secrets from both Anna and Rafe start to unravel.

The plot for this story is very refreshing and not the normal cliché storyline that one would expect from a romance novel. As the story continues, it addresses the severity of sexual harassment and rape affect an individual. I liked that the characters are able to connect and reach some understanding based on their same past experience. In addition, the author did a great job in explaining the details of the situation and it feels like you are transported into the world the characters live in.

However, the characters are poorly developed as the chapters continue. Both Anna and Rafe characters do not seem to develop or undergoes any change even with events happening. Some events are seeming to be rushed and the stories are all over the places. For someone who wants to read a novel that one is able to relate in real life, this novel is not exactly recommended. There are quite a lot of things that the author left out that it seems the plot is a little bit unrealistic.

There is a very minimal grammar error in the novel. Only sometimes, the tenses are not correctly used. Other than that, the book is written with a very easy and comprehensible language. Hence, readers would find it is fun to read lines by lines of the story. In overall, the storyline is not very predictable nor extreme.

I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars. This is because some people might find this book a good read because of the plots and issues highlighted in the story. However, I don’t really recommend the book for someone who expected the stories are fully detailed and abled to touch the heart.
