What seems to be a normal day at the museum turns out to be a day when the lines are blurred between the natural and the supernatural. The appearance of a mysterious shadow results in the theft of a valued piece and the death of a guard. Simultaneously, a group of friends embark on a journey to the Pulau Ubin Island. Finnegan, who is amongst the group, isolates himself, but he finds himself in a predicament as he falls into a ditch from trying to pursue a sparkling object that caught his eye. That sparkling object turns out to shape the rest of his destiny as he gets introduced to the realm of magic. He also gets introduced to Seraphina, whom he’s been eyeing for quite some time at the local bakery. Bound by friendship and later by the crystal, they embark on unimaginable journeys together. However, the real turn of events unfolds when a solar storm occurs, cutting off all electricity and introducing demonic, evil beings that wreak havoc across the world. With determination, Finnegan, Seraphina, and many others that they meet along the way strive to combat this evil from its direct source and restore the planet’s electricity and peace. In Luminescence Goh’s book, Chronicles of the Enchanted Vanguard Seraphina and the Divine Mandate, we see that this journey requires teamwork, friendship, and sacrifice.

I loved reading this book from beginning to end. It was filled with many plot twists as it progressed. I love the fact that a lot unfolded without the length of the book being extensive. This book contained lessons that each reader can learn from. I learnt two lessons, the first being that everyone has a valuable role to play in the betterment of society, and that community and friendship require us to take a sacrificial stance. We see this throughout the book, as each character mentioned in the book contributes to the cause that they are fighting for. In addition to this, I love how the author took time to pay attention to each character, making the roles of each character seem equally important. The second lesson that I learnt was that humanity cannot ward off evil unless we rid ourselves of the internal evil that comes with greed and self-gain. We, humans, need to do introspection because we often pose the biggest threats to ourselves.

Even though there were a decent amount of pages in the book, I found this book to be wordy, with a lot of phrases and sentences being repeated. That was the only downside of the book for me.

This book was an enthralling read. It wasn’t only entertaining but reflective as well. It was unpredictable and maintained an exciting pace. It was thoughtful of the author to include additional information about the characters, settings, timelines, and more, as a lot unravelled throughout the book. It would have been edited exceptionally if I hadn’t come across some careless mistakes. Therefore, I give this book a rating of 4 out of 5 stars.

This book is for anyone who loves fantasy and folklore, as it includes magic and many mythical creatures. I would also recommend it to anyone who loves thrillers, as it is a suspenseful book. I would not recommend it to children due to the violence.
