This is a review about the book Puffy and the Formidable Foe which was written by two people: Marie Lepkowski and Ann Marie Hannon. It is a children's book, which I feel would be suitable for children from the age of five and does also contain pictures of what the main character, which is a cat called Puffy, gets up to on one particular adventure.

Whilst reading the book, I found that it is an excellent, interactive way of helping younger children to read and also the pictures, in my opinion, are suitably designed for the reader to follow the story throughout. The book is only 16 pages long, which I find is of suitable length for my five year old daughter to read. She also enjoyed looking at the pictures with me, whilst I got her to read aloud the story. I think it would be suitable for children to not only read in class at school, but also it would be very good at being read as a bedtime story.

I do feel however the pictures could have been improved by the way they were coloured in, but it gave me the impression that the pictures were compiled by children themselves during school time, which does add to the charm of this book. I also liked the idea of having the guide at the start of the book, which most teachers would see this as being helpful to enable children to learn the meaning of the book.

Another thing that I liked about Puffy and the Formidable Foe was that a lot of the sentences rhymed, which was made clearer by being underlined, and in my opinion this would encourage children to learn more about using rhyme to tell a story. Rhyming in my opinion is a good skill to learn.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. The reason being that whilst it was a simple story, I feel that the reader could have learnt more about the cat Puffy's adventures, rather than just concentrating on one particular event. Saying that though, the length of the book would be suitable for children from the age of five and above as a way of being introduced to reading, and looking at the pictures as a guide.

What improved my rating of the book was the option at the end of the story for the reader to practice colouring in the picture of the cat, and that in turn I felt, is a great way of showing the reader how to be creative. It would certainly encourage me for my children's educational development to read more of Marie Lepkowski and Ann Marie Hannon's books as I feel the two of them work well together, and this book showed their ability clearly.
