The Barnyard Buddies Stop for Peace
by Julie Penshorn
Illustrated by Jorry Keith

“The story has three editions; this is the first of three editions.” The Barnyard Buddies Stop for Peace. The book consists of “about six characters:"  one being an owl by the name of Mrs. McCloud; she was a peacemaker. The story is based around a barnyard. One sunny day, it started to rain heavily. The animals ran to take shelter, but King was selfish, so the others animals thought. This story is a learning tool for young children. It can also teach them at the same time about how to solve problems without resorting to arguments. The book is equipped with a “Stop Peace Song” and “Mentors Program” at the end of the story. The book has lots of pictures which children can relate to. The book can even help adults when a bad situation arises. “Stop and breathe, Tell how you feel, Open minded, Plan a deal.”

I like that the book was done in such a way that a child can understand easily. It helps children practice the art of problem-solving! The book consists of 34 pages. The book also has a Mentors Program and “Stop for Peace Song” at the end of the book. The Barnyard Buddies Stop for Peace. The “Mentors Program” and “Stop for Peace” song can help the educator and parents to teach the child. I am looking forward to the follow-up stories: The Barnyard Buddies Dig Up The Truth, Barnyard Buddies Meet A Refugee! I think the author did an excellent job in writing this wonderful little book for children. I really like the fantastic artwork and drawings of the animals too. The artwork depicting the animals is done in a very pleasing manner.

What I like most about the book was the fact that it was written in rhymes. It can help the educator and the parents to teach the children about problem-solving. The book can help children as well as adults when a bad situation arises by taking a moment to think about a problem and how to resolve it. When a bad situation arises, you must “Stop and breath, Tell how you feel, Open minded, Plan a deal. ”I think a child can really benefit from this book.

I did not like that there was no coloring page. Children like to color in. Why not make it fun for young children to read, it will keep them interested.

What I least liked about the book is that I thought there could have been color pages for children to color in. It will keep young children interested, as the story unfolds.

I gave this book a rating of 3 out of 4 stars. The reason I gave the book a rating of 3 is because I think it would have been nice to include color pages for the children to color in as the story unfolds. “I would have given the book a rating of 4 if there were color pages to color in”  it would have been more fun for the children to read while coloring in. I never gave it a 2 because it was simple for children to understand. Children like animals; they can easily relate to them. I think this book would be well suited to pre-schoolers from around 3 years old. I don't think this book would be well suited for older “school-going children.”

This book sends a really important message to young readers. Peaceful problem-solving must be clearly taught and children love fables. Great review! Thanks.
