Review of Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures
How would you feel if you lost your little sibling in the zoo? This could be one of the worst places to lose a child, and I'm pretty sure the tension would be high with lots of questions being asked. In the early chapter of the book, Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures by Catherine A. Pepe, we are introduced to Donny, a five-year-old boy lost in the zoo.
In the opening chapter, the author shared a story about a young boy named Donny Miller who goes missing at the Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita, Kansas. There was a rise in tension and emotional intensity due to the situation. His ten-year-old sister, Mary Grace, immediately reacts to the announcement, showing her protective nature and deep bond with her brother. The author also highlights the caring environment of the zoo and the kindness of strangers who step up to help find Donny. The tension builds as the family members and their newfound allies spread out across the zoo in a desperate search, fearing that Donny might be in danger. The reader is drawn into the anxiety of the search, wondering where Donny could be and what might happen next.
The author does a great job of showing how real kids feel when faced with big changes. For example, Mary Grace is distraught and doesn't hold back her feelings when she finds out she has to move to California. This makes her character very relatable and realistic. Despite the disagreements and sadness, it's clear that the family loves each other a lot. Even when Mary Grace is angry, her parents are patient and try to explain why they're making these tough decisions. This shows how strong their family bond is. The book teaches important lessons about understanding, sacrifice, and trying to see things from other people's perspectives. The fact that there are lots of lessons to learn from this book made it outstanding.
This book seems a bit predictable. From the beginning, I could guess how things would turn out. This made the story less exciting because you can see what's coming. Also, the pacing of the book was fast, and I felt like the book was rushed.
I will deduct a star due to the negatives highlighted. Therefore, I will rate this book four out of five stars. The editing of the book was superb, as I didn’t come across any errors. I will recommend this book to those who love family reading.
