Review of Crimeline Hollywood
[Following is a volunteer review of "Crimeline Hollywood" by Thomas Collins.]
Crimeline Hollywood unfolds like a movie, starting with astrologer Dash Harwood being pursued by hitmen sent by Milo Karp, one of Dash's clients. Narrowly escaping, Dash changes his identity and relocates to Upper Coolidge, adopting the name Morty Buntz. Upper Coolidge is significant to him as it is the childhood home of his oldest and most cherished client, Sparklynn James, a talented performer whose career Dash helped launch. In Upper Coolidge, Dash secures a part-time job at Zappatron, a company that manufactures pest control devices, and soon receives a promotion to the HR assistant position. There, he meets Ruthann, a woman he describes as a rare beauty shaped by nature. One cool November morning, Dash hears on his clock radio that Sparklynn James, the famous actress and singer, has gone missing. He rushes to his TV and sees a live broadcast showing a two-story house surrounded by yellow crime tape, which he immediately recognizes as Sparklynn’s mountain home. Dash contacts Sparklynn’s husband, Harmon, who explains that Sparklynn stayed behind to work on a new song when she disappeared. The news of her disappearance spreads, leaving her fans and loved ones devastated. Although Dash wants to support Harmon during this challenging time, he refrains to avoid being discovered by Milo. One day, Dash receives a call from Harmon’s attorney, Wilbourne Howling III, informing him that Harmon wants to speak with him privately. Harmon reveals that a ransom demand has been made through a private channel, with strict instructions not to involve the FBI or LAPD. As the search for Sparklynn intensifies, the case is handed over to Rebecca (Becca) Fairway, a celebrity detective known for her role on a popular crime show and her blog, Crimeline Hollywood. Together, Dash and Becca work tirelessly, decoding a hidden message in Sparklynn’s proof-of-life audio that leads them to Gloryview. There, Dash collects evidence indicating that Sparklynn was present. With help from Sparklynn’s agent - T. Wayne, Dash and Becca finally find Sparklynn hidden in a secret room behind the pantry wall at Clinghouse.

While the main character, Dash Harwood, is well-developed, some secondary characters, such as Ruthann and Harmon, need more depth. Though necessary, their roles in the story may need to be explored, leaving readers desiring more insight into their motivations and backgrounds. The story could benefit from more profound character development, especially for these characters with supporting roles. Another area for improvement is the presence of minor typos scattered throughout the book. While not detracting significantly from the overall experience, these small errors suggest that the book can benefit from more thorough editing.
I rate Crimeline Hollywood 4 out of 5 stars primarily due to the editing errors. While the story is engaging, minor editing mistakes detract from the overall reading experience. These errors can interrupt the narrative flow, causing distractions that pull readers out of the immersive world the author has created. Sometimes, these mistakes must be clarified or require readers to pause and re-read sections to grasp the intended meaning fully. Additionally, the editing flaws can give the impression of a lack of polish, undermining the quality of an otherwise well-crafted story. Although the plot and characters hold strong potential, the impact of these technical issues must be addressed.
