H2Liftships -Vol 3 - BosonsWave by Bob Freeman, is a great romp through space filled with oddball characters and screwball situations. The whole misfit crew is led by Captain Graciela Lucerne. It includes Tang, a poker-playing orangutan, and Jack, a loveable canine. The yarn is an intoxicating mix of adventure and comedy whereby the crew wages a battle against pirates, scientific mishaps, and trading in interstellar stocks. An encounter with a green algae ship, in particular, leads to very humorous and thrilling events.

In fact, the humor itself is one of the strong points of this book. Of the various sets of happenings, the duo of Tang and Jack are the characters best known for providing endless laughs, while Captain Graciela's dry wit offers a dollop of sophistication to the comedy. The way in which the crew members interact is genuinely funny and certainly endearing.

The concept of bioGels as sentient computers is interesting and humorous, especially when used in scenes with the crew. The pacing is done quite well, and there's never a moment of boredom for the audience. The book found a perfect balance between action and humor in many places, making it quite breezy to read from the start right to the very end. The book was exceptionally well-edited and error-free.

At the same time, though, the humor tends to cast away some more serious aspects of the story. Some of the ethical and scientific themes could be explored a bit more to put a little meat on the story's bones. Also, if the settings and technologies were described with just a bit more detail, the humor would have been held in a firmer setting. Finally, richer character development among secondary characters would have made the whole richer.

One of the really cool parts of the book is the humor with Tang and Jack, besides Captain Graciela and her sophistication. Their relations as a crew are lovely, and, in fact, the concept of a bioGel computer being alive is really interesting. I really loved this book and would love to give it a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. This will be best for those readers who like to read very thoughtful science fiction featuring a well-developed cast of characters.
