Review of Whispers in the Dark
Are there things hidden from our sight because we are too naive or afraid to accept them? Some people claim demons and ghosts are real, but are they just crazy? Dag Connors was a hard-working FBI agent with a happy family. This all changed when his son was murdered and the killer was never found. Drinking seemed like the only way to cope with the pain, but ultimately he lost his hard-earned status within the bureau and his wife. He only believes in what he can see or experience for himself. He believes people commit murders, not ghosts or demons. Or so he thought until Detective Penelope Mallory asked for his help solving a case involving religious girls being taken by a mysterious villian that seemingly walks through walls.
This was an amazing book. The characters are well-written and have expertly evolved throughout the book. Most of the time, we read the book from the perspective of Dag, but the author utilized specific chapters to give background on some characters as well as the same scenes but viewed from another character's perspective to give the reader a more complete sense of events.
This book is a nail-biting journey that kept me guessing who the murderer was. Scenes are beautifully depicted, which is a treat in a horror book. I like that the main character has trauma from his past that he is working through; it really rounds out his character. The lead female character fell a little flat for me; she could have been portrayed better and had a little more back story other than being Catholic.
The layout of the book would have been seemless if it had not been for the poor placement of chapter headings. They are written in the same size and font as the rest of the book; not even a space is left between the heading and body of the chapter, which sours the reading experience slightly. I could not find any spelling mistakes; the book has been exceptionally edited.
If not for those two things, this book would have been impeccable. It was still a delightful experience, and I will definitely be reading more from this author. Therefore, I rate Whispers in the Dark by Chandler McGrew 4 out of 5 stars.
Fans of supernatural crime fiction will devour this book. I sure have. Minimal sexual content and moderate swearing make this a great young adult book. It does contain religious content and may shine a not-so-flattering light on Catholicism. It is also very gruesome and explicit in some scenes. If those are things you are sensitive to, I do not recommend this book to you. This is a very enjoyable book. Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read it.
