Totem by Charlie Sheldon, the third novel in the Strong Heart series, offers a compelling blend of history, mythology, and contemporary adventure. The story unfolds in the Olympic National Park, a vast and rugged wilderness that plays a crucial role in the narrative. The plot revolves around a group of characters, each with their own distinct motivations and challenges, converging in this awe-inspiring setting. Central to the story is Sarah Cooley, who embarks on a hiking trip with companions, only to find themselves on a quest to protect their ancestral heritage. Meanwhile, Victoria Oldsea, the head of an environmental project for Buckhorn Industries, faces a corporate conspiracy that threatens the integrity of the park. The novel also features Carl, a wildlife biologist investigating the mysterious deaths of elk in the area, adding a layer of intrigue and environmental concern to the narrative.

The novel excels in its descriptive passages, vividly bringing the Pacific Northwest to life. The lush forests, towering mountains, and ancient trails are depicted with such detail that the landscape becomes a character in its own right. The way the natural environment influences the story and its themes of preservation and heritage is particularly noteworthy. Additionally, the character development in the book is commendable, with each individual possessing depth and complexity. Sarah’s connection to her Native American roots and her fierce determination to defend the land stand out as particularly compelling aspects of the story. The seamless integration of historical and mythical elements with modern environmental issues is another highlight, making the narrative both engaging and thought-provoking.

Totem could be criticised for its lack of flaws, as it presents a well-edited, grammatically sound piece of fiction. However, some readers might find the absence of any notable errors or pacing issues to be somewhat atypical for a novel of this genre.

The book receives a strong 5 out of 5 stars, thanks to its engaging plot, rich character development, flawless editing, and the immersive setting of the Olympic National Park. Totem is highly recommended for readers who enjoy stories that combine history, adventure, and environmental themes, as well as those who appreciate a well-crafted narrative with a strong sense of place.
