Morgan “Cinch” McCall was traded to some Comancheros by a Comanche party that killed her family. She is determined to get revenge on the men who bought and enslaved her. She was beaten and mistreated, and they will not get away with it, nor will they do it to someone else. Now, trained with guns, knives, and kung fu, and posing as a man for safety, Cinch is ready to track and kill them. But soon she will realize there is more to life than revenge, and it comes with some other dangers. Will Cinch get her revenge? Will someone help her? Read Refuge by Mike Shellenbergar and discover everything in this Western novel.

The author’s writing style is engaging and captivating; it is easy to keep track of the events and the characters. I enjoyed reading about Cinch, her experiences, and her desires. One of the scenes I enjoyed the most was about her in a clothing store, as it showed a different side of a character and made her more realistic. The detailed narration of events, places, and even people made me feel like part of the story. The fact that the main character is a woman is also something I loved, as Western novels usually portray women as weak and in need. Overall, there was not a single boring moment in this book.

While this is a historical fiction novel, I would have enjoyed some context and explanation at the beginning of the novel. For me, understanding the events would have been easier if the author had added some context or details about what a Comanche or a Comanchero was, as well as what Cinch lived before the events in the book. Since this was a personal preference and some readers will not care about the lack of explanation or will have previous knowledge, I will not be deducting any stars. I would enjoy it if the author wrote a prequel, as I felt the details Cinch provided about her past were not enough.

Overall, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. The book has been professionally edited, but I did find some minor errors. The book is entertaining, and the characters are perfectly constructed. Even with the lack of historical knowledge and context, the book was enjoyable and easy to understand.

I believe those who enjoy historical novels will enjoy this book, especially American history and Western stories. Those who enjoy strong female characters will also adore this book.
