Cruel Lessons by Randy Overbeck is a riveting and spine-tingling mystery novel that takes readers on an exhilarating journey through the aftermath of the tragic, drug-related deaths of a group of young boys. I was captivated by the realness of such a sensitive, raw issue like drug use in kids and how they come to possess these drugs. The book's thorough plot offers a deep exploration of this topic, the characters, and their experiences.

One notable aspect of the novel is the way it delves into the intricacies of the human psyche, showcasing the impact of trauma, loss, and moral dilemmas on the characters. I enjoyed the way we were given pieces of information about the main characters through the present time as well as flashbacks, helping us put together the puzzle to find their true motivations.

The attention to detail in the book is commendable, as the author meticulously weaves together various threads of the narrative to create an intense and immersive reading experience. From the small-town dynamics to the intricacies of the investigation, every aspect of the story feels well-developed and genuine. I particularly enjoyed the book’s ability to pull me into the story with the various twists and turns, the suspense keeping me enthralled throughout.

It is worth noting that there are some inconsistencies and errors in the text, particularly in the dialogue and character details. The variations in the book title (In the Acknowledgments section, it is referenced as Cruel Lessons, A Cruel Lessons, and A Cruel Lesson, in that order) and the discrepancies in character names (First, Chad’s last name is Hayes, later, it is Thorton), among other errors, might cause confusion for readers.

There were times when I thought the story was a bit drawn out. But overall, Cruel Lessons is a thought-provoking and poignant read that will resonate with fans of mystery and psychological thrillers.
